Surgeon recommended roux n y, I was thinking sleeve

Recommended Posts

I finally met with the surgeon today. I went in thinking sleeve. Came out scheduled for the roux n y. Kinda shocked. He said if I wanted to get rid of my Metabolic syndrome and diabeties that that was the way to go. Surgery is scheduled for July 7th after my 3 week road trip across country with my kids.

I also planned on the sleeve and was redirected to the bypass due to several conditions I have. Took me a bit to get used to the idea but I'm more comfortable day by day and just want to get it done and be on the "other side"!

I was thinking sleeve as well and then I started to do more research about the difference between the two and discovered that the bypass is better at controlling /preventing diabetes which is why I changed my mind and am now scheduled for the bypass on June 16th! I have been pre diabetic my whole life and am now within 1 point of being considered diabetic this is not a path I am willing to head down having just turned 30!

I had Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure among other problems. I had a Roux-en-y gastric bypass. Two days after surgery when I left the hospital, I was off all my diabetes medicine and three weeks after surgery I was off all my high blood pressure medicine. I am now 1 year post-op and these conditions remain in remission.

Bunnytoes, so many people have reported being taken off so many medications. I sincerely hope it will be the same for you! I am hoping to get off a bi-pap machine, cholesterol medication, pain medication, and hopefully reducing the strength of medicine I take for fibromyalgia, as well as loose about 100 lbs.

Like others, I go between excitement and concern if I am taking the right way. I believe I am, but when others talk it down to me that is when I question myself and my decision. I know this is right for me. I just have to be patient! :-)

Do you have a surgery date yet? Mine will hopefully be early August but that is yet to be determined.

Keep us posted as to how you are doing! :-) best of luck!

James Marusek, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. It is always good and oh so helpful to hear about others success stories. A year out! Wow!

Like Mexicangirl commented above, I can't wait to see where and how I am a year out from surgery! When I think about it I get such a warm, happy feeling because I believe not only will I be off most my medicine and weigh far less than I do now, I will actually be able to breath without so much effort. I will be able to put my shoes on and tie them without holding my breath and struggling. AND I will have more energy and feel better about myself! Oh! And of course I can't wait to be able to "buy off the rack" again!!! :-)

Anyway, we sure do appreciate your feedback. Please come back and fill us in on your progress!

Thanks!

I had RNY bypass on 04/17 because I was diabetic and on diabetic Rx 3x's a day, my PCP was ready to put me on insulin. The day after my surgery I was taken off of my diabetic Rx, the next 3 weeks I still check my sugar levels with my meter and all my numbers have been under 100. Well on week 4 they have gone up in the range of 120-135?????????? go figure. I looked it up on the internet and searched why they would go up if I only had 1 meal for the day and it consisted of 2oz of broiled fish and 1 cheese stick for the day. Keep in mind I am in week 4 for my foods. What i found out is the body goes into starvation mode if you go long periods of time w/out any food and your brain tells the Liver (?) to dump glucose into your system for energy. Now keep in mind I am no nurse or Dr. but I am thinking "what?????" I am told if not hungry don't eat,and so I don't. I see my PCP the last week of this month and yes I have a lot of questions on this. Has any one else ever experienced this before? My NUT advised me not to drink Protein Shakes they would rather me eat Protein vs drink it but I KNOW I am not getting enough protein for cals for the day. My NUT told me my body has enough protein to last me 3 months after the surgery. So I am confused.

MexicanGirl and I are cousins and we are doing this together....same June 16tg date And everything. When we first started, we were dead set on the sleeve...we wouldn't even consider RNY, but the more research we did, the more it made sense.

What clinched it for me/us is our friend who got the sleeve in October. Everytime we saw her, she was eating/drinking something she wasn't supposed to. In one night we saw her eat a hot dog wrapped in a tortilla with mayo, chocolate milk and Reese's Peanut Butter cups, then have to go throw up because her sleeve was too full, then come back and eat 2 bowls of Cereal and some chips. She was eating everything bad, and didn't have to fear dumping syndrome. She claims that when she eats that way, she loses more weight. She's still losing, but it's very slow.

We decided that we couldn't do that and we needed the threat of dumping to at least scare us out of eating bad food. Also, my Dad died because of diabetes and I'll be damned if I'm going to let my kids bury me too early too. I am so happy with my decision to switch to the RNY. MexicanGirl and I keep each other on the straight and narrow and when things get too tough, we say "June 16th" like a mantra.

Healthy life, here we come!

I suspect that your body has over the years efficiently stored some of your excess food in the form of fat. Fat acts as a cushion. When you are starving mode, the body reverses the process and converts the fat into energy to keep your body going.

Nancy E, I am hoping for an early August surgery date also. My last nutrition appointment is July 10th, and at that time my surgeons office can turn in the paperwork to my insurance company.

I too go between excitement and concern. So many people feel like that they have to tell me about this friend or that person who is "always sick" after weight loss surgery. But I am "always sick" now because of my weight!

I have seen people post about weight loss of 150 lbs in one year. I can only hope my progress is as good as that!

Bunny toes, it seems for every one person happy for you ten more can't wait to tell you about how bad so and so looked since surgery or some other scare tactic. Most of them are over weight themselves so I don't know if perhaps they fear the surgery for themselves and therefor manifest it onto others, or if they are afraid someone might actually look and feel better than them, or a combination. Either way, I am now very hesitant to tell anyone and wish that I never told the people I did.

Like you, I am excited to know that weight loss can be rather quick as long as you follow the directions given you from your doc and nut. I can't wait to get there and see the new me/ old me/ real me!

Best wishes to you and let's keep in touch!

Helenamarie83,

I am so happy for you and your cousin being able to do this together! What a blessing! Having someone to confide in, to share the emotional roller coaster with will strengthen your resolve, especially since you are so close. And after the surgery it will be a big plus also! You and your cousin are very fortunate! Bless you both on your journey and keep us informed on how you are doing.

It is so nice to have this forum where we can all ask and share information! Thanks everyone!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
