My bypass I'd only taking place on 29th May but my sleeve was dec 2012, I can eat what ever I want with no restriction, I lost 50kgs and gained 50 kgs, since then I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, my health just keeps deteriating, my sleeve has without a doubt stretched, I drink about 4 Pepsi max a day, I still believe it is all my own doing though

I had bypass to get me off my medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholestrol, reflux, Migraines, and arthritis. I am not off all medications (8).

Hello @@itsmekarenlee - I am revising from sleeve to bypass. I'm having extreme gastric reflux. It is what my bariatric surgeon has recommended for me, so is what I am going to do. Long term reflux can lead to Barrett's (pre-cancer) and cancer, both I do not wish to play around with.

Hi :)

Thank you for your replies.

Did you have reflux beefier getting the sleeve? This is why my Dr recommends bypass for me. I have had to take 40mg of omaprozol (basically prilosec) every day for many years now. It's inherited. Thanks grandpa and mom. Lol my brother has it too. I was wanting the sleeve but my Dr said that there's no guarantees the GErD will go away so bypass is better.

Ugh, "beefier" should be "before"

Judy, the sleeve weight loss didn't help get you off your meds?

Is this common, as the surgeon and a second opinion from GI who did my endoscopy recommended a bypass as well.

Did your drs who did your sleeves not tell you that the heartburn/gerd could get worse with a sleeve before your got the sleeve? I'm finding that drs are neglecting mentioning this to their patients. I just want to shoot it out to everyone who has this provlem before they make their decision but I know it can be 50/50 chance of it getting worse after.

I had a band .. No reflux, then sleeve and reflux wickedly increased! Now bypass is suppose to help decrease symptoms. I curious.... How much? 50, 60, 80%.??? Per surgeon, no answer, per GI 75 % or better

I had bypass surgery and hiatal hernia repair back in November. It was a complete success. Had reflux for over 25 years and on meds. I am completely free of reflux now. No medications of any kind. Once in a great while I might take a Tums, but nothing at all compared to my life before surgery.

I had herd before my bypass abs taking 40mg omaprozle daily. After the standard 30 days of taking it after surgery I haven't needed to take it. Gerd is gone.

I just want peiple to be educated about this since it sounds like most doctors aren't advising their patients about the increased chance of the heartburn getting worse with the sleeve so that they had they would save the trouble and expense if being a revision.

I'm from MA. Bypass surgery in July. My surgery Ctr has a monthly support group. I'm surprised at the # of people that have sleeve surgery and had GERD problems before, and will be worse for them after. I can only surmise they may be smokers and therefore don't qualify for the bypass. I know my surgeon strongly suggests bypass for almost everyone, except smokers.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
