Dr pushing roux-en-y instead of sleeve

Recommended Posts

The surgeon is trying to change my mind from the sleeve. he thinks I could have gerd because I have heartburn maybe 1-2x a month (due to what I ate) and a tums will cure it. I have my heart set on the sleeve, want the restriction and feel like too many people have failed and gained weight back with rny. What's your thoughts?

If they aren't willing to discuss it further, find another surgeon. I would not settle.

Hello! I also had gerd. My doctor actually encouraged me to have the sleeve. My heart was set for the band. I had surgery on Friday May 9th. During surgery they had to correct a hernia that was cause by my acid reflux. I'm happy so far with the sleeve. It is painful but I know that it will be all worth it at the end.
I would suggest you talk to another doctor.
Good luck!

I also had reflux. You know why? Because I was fat. LOL

Cured that. Haha

Ok, seriously, getting a second opinion now is a must. Don't seek out someone with the same opinion as you, but just a valid medical opinion. Explain your concerns. It may be the same opinion as the fist surgeon, it may be different. Ask questions. The "whys" are important.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
