6 month Weight Management

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I have a question for all of you. I just completed my 6 months of required weight management. I have gained 12 pounds during the 6 months. I followed the diet as closely as possible, but still managed to gain. Have any of you gone through this? It is extremely frustrating! I am worried insurance will not approve my surgery due to this. My surgeon did not say I needed to lose or maintain my weight in order to have surgery. That was not a requirement, but it is still bothersome. Can anyone relate to this?

Was the 6 months an insurance requirement? My insurance required a 3 month diet and it clearly stated you could not gain weight during those 3 months.

It depends on the insurance. I had completed the 6 month diet before I even considered surgery. It was at the end of that 6 month diet monitoring that my doctor told me I needed surgery because I kept gaining weight. It didn't affect my insurance approval, it actually showed that I couldn't lose the weight on my own.

If you are unsure, call the surgical coordinator at your surgeon's office. They are very knowledgable about what each insurance company is looking for and can help you. :)

I went to Mexico so insurance was not an issue but my doc wanted us to lose 5% of our weight before surgery to shrink our livers. The liver is in the way of the surgery and if too big there can be complications. I know my doctor has refused to do the surgery on people who did not lose enough weight. Maybe you will still need to do a liquid diet to lose some before the surgery.

Depends on your insurance.

Hello...with the whole 6 month requirement before your approval, does it still have to be consecutive visits to your doctor?

I agree that it depends on your insurance. My insurance requires a 6 month class and you are supposed to lose 10% of your weight in that time frame....in the long run, it doesn't effect the surgery if you didn't lose the 10%..they still sent you through to the surgeon regardless, just told you that you couldn't gain anything from that point (seeing the dr after the 6 month program) to the point where you have surgery.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
