I am really scaring myself ........

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am pre-surgery for a sleeve and almost done with all my pre-ops.

I really want this surgery BUT, I am SO scared!!!

I am worried I may be trading being healthy and trim with a Lifetime of possible GERD.

My dad had suffered all his life with GERD and he's never had surgery and even with his meds he suffers.

Can anybody tell me how common this is, and is it really bad, severe GERD or is anyone suffering from it?

Sorry being so negative I'm just so nervous about what could happen.

I sooo badly am trying to be excited about a new life, and it's hindering my happiness.

Any advise or comments appreciated. Thank you.

I had GERD ahead of time. We went ahead with the sleeve because I had lost a great deal of weight being sick in the past and the GERD disappeared then.

I still take a daily dose of Dexilant. But I can honestly say I haven't had the GERD flare up since the surgery…maybe a tiny bit of reflux feeling if I've eaten too much, but that is it.

There are plenty of people who have had the opposite experience but I don't think you can predict GERD any more than you can predict who will have a leak or another problem.

I had horrible acid reflux before surgery. Acid would come out of my nose. That's how bad. I was scared b/c people who never had this before surgery get it after. Since surgery I have had acid reflux but not as bad as before. I was taking one acid reducer a day since surgery. I am 4.5 months out and in the last 3 weeks I have only needed It once, and that was bc I eat Tomato sauce. Before surgery I could of never gone 3 weeks with out eating a bottles of tums. I know we are all different but losing weight has helped my acid reflux

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
