3 week stall? is this a real thing?

Recommended Posts

I have been feeling awesome and recovering so quickly it's been a miracle. I had surgery on April 8th. I am already up to soft foods like chicken and fish with steamed veggies.

Problem is I haven't lost any weight this week. That makes me upset. Is it common to stall when only 3 weeks out? I lost 10 pounds pre surgery and am only down 14 since surgery. And words of wisdom?

Yep, just search for it and TONS of people go through it! In my totally non professional opinion, it's your body finally giving into the idea that you'll never eat a normal diet again and holds on to everything it can. In a week or two (or three), as you add more calories, it will again feel ok with burning off fat stores.

The best way I have heard to over come any stall is to exercise more. Good Luck and keep it up.

Hi I had leeve done on april 8 too. I too have lost 14 lbs since surgery and have hit a stall. Imthinking I would have lost little more but I became dehydrated week 2 went back into the hospital and iv gave me another 6 or 7 pounds. I didnt get the drainage tube and fluids pooled in my abdomen laying on my stomach making it painful to drink or eat. I haven't been cleared for exercise yet so I just walk. Im not in a real hurry though for the weight to drop I know eventually it will come. However, I was reading on here yesterday that if you increase you Water and Protein it will kickstart the weightloss, I tried it. Even though its 2 am, looks like I lo see t a pound. Good luck to you....

Hi Meesh!

Yes it is very normal to stall in your first month. My surgeon and nut both told me I would stall for many reasons, not enough Protein intake, body trying to catch up and adjust with the rapid weight loss or when you change your stage in foods. The plataeu can last 2-4 weeks so dont panic! Continue following the diet and you will be fine. I am 2 weeks postop and I have been at a stall for 5 days already, Ive lost total of 19lbs.

Good Luck on your journey!!!

I had my surgery on February 24, and just came out of a 3-week stall. It's frustrating, and my scale almost went out the window!

Just stay as focused as possible, and push through it. You'll be fine.

Be well…

I hit a 3 week long stall at week three. Even though I read about it here it was hell. Worst part is my Dr and nut refuse to acknowledge that stalls happen.

I had the three week stall last week and then all of a sudden it started back again. Sometimes if you don't drink enough Water it can cause you to hold excess water weight. It will start going down again just don't let it get to you!!!

No no! Two separate thoughts. My surgery was in February. The stall was these past three weeks. LOL My bad.

My stall happened 3 wks post op . Im not to upset because before surgery I read tons of articles on this site about the stall, so I knew it would happen. But I don't start losing weight after the 3 Rd week I'm probably gonna have a breakdown lol April 7 was my surgery date .

I had my surgery April 10. Day of surgery weight 237 and I stalled at 227. It's been 10 days at 227 the good thing is that Im not gaining but everymorning when I step on that scale I get so mad. Today I went and got a new scale LOL...I'm in denial I guess. And I wonder how long it will last.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
