Depression right aftter weight loss surgery

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on April 23,14. I fell into a slump after surgery. got majorly got depressed in the hospital and I was only there 1 night. I can just start crying at the drop of a hat. Then went home and started having urinary retention issues and then one of the incision sites broke open a little bit. I am off all the narc pain meds and nausea med that they give. However I am always so tired and feel like I can sleep the days away. I have been also having a hard time making sure I am getting my Protein and other liquids in. Has anyone else ever went through this?

You are still really early in the process. It will take you a few weeks to master the Protein, Fluid, and calorie combo. Or now constantly sip as much as you can. As you heal the violume you can tolerate will improve. I think feeling sad after surgery can be a normal response. We are making a life changing decision, it's major so I don't think tree is any wrong emotion when it comes to this. You will feel so much better at you six week post op. Give yourself time to rest and process for now. This is the time for that. I wish you the best of luck in your journey:)

I'm nearly 4 weeks out and I am still experiencing this a bit. I got REALLY down after surgery and teetered between "What have i done to myself?" and "I got this!" quite a bit. sometimes within the space of 10 minutes. It's helping being back at work and in my routine again, but I have read over and over that this is totally normal.

You just put yourself through a lot. And I don't know about you, but before this, if I had been through a lot, food was going to be the thing I used to feel better. I think part of my slump is not having that coping mechanism.

Be kind to yourself! It's overwhelming now, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Keep telling yourself that and fake it 'till you make it. :)

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling depressed :( I was just sleeved on 4/21/14, and I remember my nurses saying that the anesthesia can have an effect on your mood so maybe it's that? I didn't have that problem; my issue was mostly pain in one main incision, and gas. I swear for every sip I took it felt like I have to burp at least 5 times to take another one, so yes I def had trouble getting in my liquids and Protein too. Now 5 days post op, I'm able to drink Protein shakes, Soups, G2 Gatorade, and Water with no issue. I know you'll get there too; I'll be rooting for you :)

You are on day three? Your body is very confused, you are coming off anesthesia and narcotics which can cause depression.

Take it easy on yourself, this is all normal after being cut open!

Your body is healing and feeling tired is normal, sleeping a lot is normal. You are adjusting to very few calories and only getting fluids.

You are fine, just rest and let your body heal.

I cried and cried post op. I was depressed tonight watching my family eat dinner while I was sipping Soup. However, I have been reading weight loss surgeries for dummies and it shows me how much I will gain from this surgery.

I refused to eat with other people! Too depressing!

I"m not sure if this is at all true,, but it helps me to think about weight loss this way some - so heard goes. My sister who lost 200+ lbs about eight years ago told me this per her TCM/MD doctor. She said that it's as if our fat cells hold body memories and emotions, just like we know the hormonal influence fat or gain loss has, it's like this for hard memories, and losing these old pounds of fat it's like we're processing the emotions from those memories as we lose them. I realize it's totally unverifiable by traditional medical standards, but when I think of it that way, it helps me let go of some of my bizarro feelings and sadness that I go through losing these days. Good luck to you, and I hope you're feeling much better soon and back to a more even keel. If not, please talk to someone who's a pro, okay?!

I was hoping to find a post on depression post surg. I had it before surgery too but it was controlled with anti-depressants. I was sleeved on 12-3-13 and have done well with no complications and I'm down 60 lbs. so that part is all good. The negative in all this is that my depression has come back full force and I'm struggling. Like u, I struggle to get through the days. I could easily sleep the day away. I also have to really force myself to drink. I do Gatorade or G2 for help with electrolytes. I am under the care of a psychiatrist and I've been seeing him a lot lately. Changing meds and adjusting doses to try and make me feel better. He believes I may not be absorbing the medication as well as I did before surgery. I understand depression and know it all to well. It can stop u from living your day to day life. Please know your not alone in this and if it continues u may wanna see a professional. Hugs for u, take care !!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
