Issues with being alone after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Because of everyone's schedules it looks like I might be alone after I return home from my VSG. Has anyone else done this alone? Did you have any particular issues?

Thanks!

I wouldn't have been able to do it. I couldn't reach down enough to takeoff my SCDs for the first 24 hrs... And I needed to pee frequently. lol

I live alone and had no problems after surgery. I made sure to stock up on everything I needed. I did have my housekeeper come by for an extra visit to take care of things like vacuuming and mopping, because I didn't think I would have the energy for that. Also had her change the kitty litter boxes since lifting anything that heavy was restricted for me for four weeks. Other than that, no issues whatsoever. I was glad not to have anyone around -- I was able to focus on getting my fluids and Protein in, and to nap as much as I wanted, without anyone bothering me. If I had lived with anyone I probably would have sent them away!

I was on my own and had no problems at all.

The only thing I needed was a ride home from the hospital. My doctor told my wife, not to baby me, make me get up and fix my own foods and stuff. The surgeons insist that you be reasonably active after surgery. It cuts the risk of the most common complications.

Like the above response, just make sure you have everything you are going to need for the first few days because you shouldn't be driving.

Lucky y'all! I needed help for the first 24 hrs for sure. But after that, life was easier.

Are you having outpatient surgery or will you have a stay in the hospital?

I would be in the hospital the standard amount of time (2 or 3 days).

I was fine alone. But you can't bend over to pick anything up that might drop on the floor. If it fell, it stayed there.

Then you should do fine alone. :)

Ps: there's no "standard" amount of time.

To clarify my answer earlier, I was an outpatient. I wouldn't suggest the first 24 hrs after surgery alone-- not the same as 24 hrs after discharge. Big difference. Lol

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
