So I received a call back from the surgeon's office today, and my first appointment / intake day will be May 15th. She said my insurance didn't actually have a lot of criteria, other than BMI, comorbidities, etc. She didn't say anything about a 6 month supervised diet, so hopefully I can get the surgery sooner than I had expected!

I'm insanely excited to get started, but of course crazy nervous too. Which I'm sure will only get worse, haha. So I just wanted to post and see if anyone had any insights/warnings/things to consider for the first appointment.

One thing is for sure, surgeons require different things...I'm required labs, chest x-ray, EKG, sleep apnea study, nutrition class and psych evaluation. I hear some people getting scoped and stress tests. You will get weighed, find out BMI and Pre- op diet information probably, God Bless!

Surgeons vary on their requirements and it can depend on what your comorbidities are, what meds you are on and your BMI. Don't assume anything. Just because they didn't mention it doesn't mean you won't need it. Just don't want you to have a realistic idea of what to expect. Good luck to you!

Oh of course. I'm not assuming anything. Plus even if the insurance doesn't require it, the surgeon very well may. It sure would be a lot more convenient for me though, haha. Either way I'm ready to do whatever it takes.

Thanks a lot everyone.

FYI, can't smoke, if you do you will have to quit before surgery!

Didn't know that. Fortunately I never touch the stuff.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
