Why no drinking 30/30?

Recommended Posts

I have been told multiple times that after the surgery I should not drink any liquids 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after eating.

Is this because the liquids cause the food to move more quickly through the stomach, resulting in not feeling full as long? Or is it because of malabsorption issues?

Or what?

Thanks!

I don't know the science, but I know what happened to me. When I would drink after eating, I would get hungry right away again.

I tested it enough to find the "right time". With solid foods (cube chicken), i gotta leave a good 30-40min before drinking.

(I also drink too much too fast I think)

My surgeon eliminated his "no drinking 30 min before" rule as he said research has shown the Water goes through fast enough not to worry. He has astrong stance on not drinking for 30-60 min after so that it doesn't come back up (from having nowhere to flow through) and doesn't flush your food out, leaving you hungry.

Hmmm my doc said to not drink 30-60 before and after due to if you drink before, your pouch fills up then when you go to eat there's no room ? Says it takes at least that amount of time for the pouch to drain ??

I Don't Know !! Lol my surgery is tomorrow so I don't have any experience yet.

This has been a popular question lately. This is from a bypass patient, but it is true for sleevers as well. If you don't believe it, try it yourself. I know I can eat way more when I drink and eat.

My doc originally gave the 30/30 rule in my pre-surgery nutrition class, but after surgery I was told to forget that. I was told to drink Water right up until the point that you sit down to eat. Don't drink while you eat but start drinking about 15 minutes after you finish your meal. Wondering if others have received the same (changed) advice.

My dr had a 30 min before and 60 min after rule. I follow the 60 min after rule religiously, and it is second nature now. In fact, i feel quite uncomfortable if I drink during meals. I stay full for several hours after a meal.

The biggest annoyance is Soup, which is something I love. Now I sip the liquid first, wait 5 minutes, then eat the solids. That kinda sucks.

I do drink up to 5-10 minutes before eating. It doesn't seem to cause any problems, for me, at least.

My surgical team allows us to drink up to the meal, but not during and not for 30 minutes after. We also aren't allowed Soup or Cereal because it's the same thing as drinking with your meal. Well, we aren't allowed cereal during weight loss phase anyway because it has grains and they are not permitted!

I've found that drinking right after has little/no effect on my hunger. However, if I eat to capacity (lol four oz) it can make me sick to add Water on top.

I didn't really drink while eating even before, so I can't speak to during.

I have no real problems with Soup. The veggies get mushy enough in the broth, and since I don't eat rice or Pasta, I don't encounter any barriers there. Drinking Water on the other hand is a real problem for me. I have to give it a good 15 to 20 minutes, or the Water comes right back out!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
