I'm currently 2 days post-op. Glad to be home but I must admit I feel like I've been hit by a bus. I've read alot of posts on here & you guys have been my inspiration that the pain will eventually get better. I've had no nausea or vomiting so that's a plus but the abdominal soreness is a killer. Probably more so because I'm used to constantly being on the move. Now I have to take my time with everything. It's also a struggle to get my Protein and Water in because I really dont feel hungry at all. Any suggestions?

Even with my struggles, I feel no regret. I know eventually I'll feel great (just wish that time would hurry up! Lol) I'm committed to just take this journey day by day.

The first week is very rough. Something changed for me at 2 weeks and I started feeling better. Today is 16 days out and I'm doing so much more. I had no desire to eat those first 5 days but now I'm doing well with the soft foods. I was so overwhelmed trying to figure out how to get in all the Protein and Water that I called my nut and she said just do the best you can and not to overthink it too much this early on. I swear it gets easier. You re lucky u didn't have regret because I totally had those feelings that first week but now I'm getting the hang of things and I don't have any pain that my regrets are out the window. And I've shut that window too :).

Keep trying to do the best you can and get the rest you need because your body went through major surgery. My np also said your hormones are in flux and some people experience some sadness like post pardom. It does go away.

Best of luck to you!!

I am exactly one week and although we all heal differently, here has been my progression so far. Day 3 was my worst, I felt dazed and in pain, not even wanting to do anything but sleep although it was hard to get real sleep. I stopped the pain meds that night because I think they were making it worse. Day 4 I was much more alert but the diarrhea kicked in, oh yay! Went to church for an hour in morning, rested all day, then back for 2 hours in the pm. Not terrible. Day 5 (Monday)I felt so much better, like it had been a whole week of recovery overnight. Yesterday was like a normal-ish day, no naps, minor pain, drove for the first time, still restricted on movement but I've got older kids who made dinner, did light chores, etc. improvement came so quickly after day 3! Honestly at this point my back pain from hunching and not a ton of movement has been the worst of it today. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thanks everyone!! I can't wait for the pain to go away so I can stop taking the pain meds. They were originally going to send me home with Dilaudid but since that has caused me vomiting in the past they switched it to Percocet. It's uncomfortable taking them because I feel they're too big for my new stomach. It's hard getting one down, let alone 2 at a time as they prescribed. Everything makes me burp that goes down. Have any of you tried the Gas-X strips? Did they help at all?

The sooner you get off the pain meds the better off you will be. The pain meds will make you mentally tired and put you in a brain fog. The Gas X strips are good but you need to keep moving as that is what gets the gas out, the blood circulating, and you feeling better. When you are resting, try to make out your menus in advance so you won't have to think about what you will eat at each meal. The first 3 weeks are pretty tough because of your sensitive and tender new tummy but it really does get easier. I'm 6 weeks out and I other than losing weight and only eating small amounts, I'd never believe I had surgery. It's really great.

I am six days post op. The first 3 days were awful. I could not tolerate cold and all I had was pre made Protein Drinks. So my friend picked me up some non flavored vegetable Protein. I add it to chicken or beef broth. I feel like it made a huge difference for me.

The first couple days is tough, it's important to stay hydrated though, every couple minutes try and take small sips of h2o or you Protein Drink. It gets easier every day.

Best wishes to a speedy recovery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
