Pre-auth diet - 6 months to qualify for surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

I have a provisional acceptance into my insurance's bariatric program (Regence) and I have to loose weight over the next 6 months in order to qualify for surgery. What are some of the things people have tried who’ve been in a similar boat? Are there any resources on this site for what I’m calling a pre-auth vs pre-op diet. Thanks

PS. This is my first post after having lurked for a several weeks.

Start with the basics of weightloss surgery:

Protein first

64 ounces of Water a day

No liquids for 30 minutes before or after emails

Small bites chewed to the consistency of applesauce

Give up carbonated beverages

Increase exercise

I was almost 6 mo in the waiting for me as well. Talk to the nutritionist there and see if they will let you "check in" once a month. That's what they did with me. It went okay. As long as I lost something they were happy.(Even if it was only 2 pounds!) That last month is when they kicked my weight loss in gear with 5 Protein Shakes & 1 Protein Bar a day!! I don't reccommend starting with that. Do the high protein/low carb and you will be fine until they direct you to do otherwise. Also, use this time to gather as much info as you can on the procedure and post op people. I was glad to have the time so I could be mentally prepared. I think it made a world of difference for me just being in the right positive frame of mind. You will do great!!! :)

If you haven't already, definitely set up a myfitnesspal.com account and get busy logging all your food intake. That helped me a lot! I also gave up drinking anything with calories and anything carbonated.

I am about 1/2 way thru my 6 month wtg period with BCBS. I've lost 46 lbs. Best advice...+++ protein... small meals...no carbonated drinks..I was limited to 1500 cals a day. I was so mad when I found out I had to wait but it will better prepare me for the life change that's coming!!

46 pounds? Holy lord, but I guess that could happen dropping to 1500 cals per day. Congrats on your efforts

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
