Hurts to eat/swallow

Recommended Posts

Hi veteran sleevers! I was just sleeved 12 days ago and I'm not on solids yet but I want to know when it stops hurting when I eat or, for now swallow. It hurts bad when I eat pudding or drink a Protein shake sometimes. It's usually after a few drinks.

I want to know when that pain stopped for you. I have about 2 weeks to go before I can eat food but I'm curious. Thanks!

Hi Miss, this forum is for Vets who are 12 months our or more only to post, I will move your great question to a forum that will be viewed by vets and others as well. Best of luck with the new sleeve!

Is the pain getting any less as time passes, MissCK? When I was first post-op, even tiny sips of plain Water made my sleeve hurt. It was like a sharp, squeezing pain--is that what you're experiencing, or is it different for you?

For me, the pain gradually lessened over time, so that first it became okay to swallow liquids (especially warm ones like tea, or Water that had a little Mio or Crystal Light added). Then it became easier to handle eating soft foods, and eventually the pain went away completely.

Remember, there's a LOT of swelling in your new sleeve. It's super-sensitive and bound to kick back when it's irritated. I used to imagine that a tiny, angry dictator who wore cleats and threw temper tantrums used to live in my sleeve. It's ridiculous, but it helped me to keep my sense of humor through the pain. Eventually that sleeve-dictator either moved out or got overthrown--don't worry, it won't last too much longer. And if it does, send out a call to your doctor just to let them know. They will probably have a lot of good advice for you, since it's probably a common issue!

I was sleeved the 7th and am still trying to figure out what "she " wants and when she wants it! I am on 3 weeks of liquids only and my surgeon said 1oz every 15 min no more than 4oz in an hour. I used to drink 5-6 44 oz glasses a day and as such drank a WHOLE lot more than 1oz/15min. My struggle now is remembering to SIP not guzzle or whatever I did before. When I stay within those guidelines "she" and I get along great but if I pick up and drink mindlessly like I used to HOLY COW "she" lets me know it. Finding the balance between Protein and liquids and still keep her happy is a challenge for me. Wish you all the best. We can do this!

Shadowsmom hahaha "she". I have found that I was drinking too much too fast. :). I give myself 1 hr to finish my morning smoothie and it doesn't hurt. Thanks love!

I'm almost 3 weeks out and it still hurts me a lot. I still need pain meds. I'm a baby. Water doesn't go down easy and the burping and bubbling is so annoying I just don't want to eat at all.

Always - I'm sorry to hear it's still hurting you to drink Water. Hang in there it will get better. Hugs.

I am now POD (post op day) #4, and it still hurts. Maybe not quite as much as it did on day #2, but it hurts. I am just going slowly and trying to embrace the pain that tells me I had the surgery that will change me life. It has also helped me become a sipper rather than a guzzler. If I didn't have pain, I am sure I would be in old habits of sucking down liquids to my heart's content. I have gathered from all the senior members that this isn't uncommon and can last anywhere from a few days to weeks.

On a related note...anyone in the South know where to get good Decaf unsweetened ice tea? I would love to go to Sonic since they have the best ice, but unfortunately, it is caffeine only!

Do you know someone with a keurig? My keurig makes the best tea and with a little Truvia it's the bomb.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
