Pre-op Sugar Addict... Worried

Recommended Posts

I've heard a lot of things about how VSG is harder for people with a sweet tooth... I'm worried as I have a HUGE one and have struggled with it all my life. I made lots of progress the last few months with my binge eating issues (primarily sugar) and dropped 30lbs and kept it off. However, I'm still super anxious about it.

My pre-op diet starts in two weeks and I decided to cut out sugar cold turkey three days ago and will try to keep low carb as this usually helps me quite a bit. I know that I'll probably have some sugar here or there in the future, but I know it has to be kept at a minimum along with carbs because large amounts trigger binges. This will probably be how I need to live my whole life to be successful and I'm ready to accept it.

Any advice/ tips/ success stories??

Oh u sound just like me when I was preop. I was a binged on sweets. My meals at times were sweets. High fat and high sugar sweets. I would get lethargic when I did binge on this stuff. Would u believe the sleeve has drastically reduced my desire for sweets. I can not physically and don't to binge on sweets like I used to. I am drawn to healthy foods these days. With that said ..when I do want something cool and refreshing I eat sugar free Popsicles..sweets are 80% dark chocolate every once in a while. I -2. Squares. I may take one bite of sweets if we go out. And only one. I usually am satisfied with my meal to even think about a dessert. It is all good. Ps my nut wants me to have sweets occasionally to get rid of my all or nothing attitude.

Hi because of my love for sweets my doctor suggested the bypass that way I cannot even sneek and eat sweets. Good luck.

My surgeon stated that many that are sleeved get a dumping syndrome from eating sugar/sweets. That's what I'm looking forward to, as I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas. :\ I am in pre-approval stage still, so I really can't say one way or another. This is just what the surgeon and nutritionist have all told me.

Continue to eat sweets, or lose weight. The answer has been easy. I have had low sugar ice cream in the freezer 3 months. Doesn't tempt me. We women will all agree we worry so much! There are fruits, SF puddings, SF popsicles, etc. The Bariatric Advantage chocolate Calcium citrates are like a sweet little Tootsie Roll a day. SF applesauce with SF Torani Syrup stirred in, along with shakes with Torani syrups. all flavors. The possibilities are endless. My tastes have definitely changed. The SF pudding and Jello sit in the pantry. For some reason I have not wanted them. I hope that you will experience the same. Best of luck! This surgery will change your life.

That's so encouraging to hear, although, I did hear that this isn't the case for everyone... which is why I'm still worried. You're definitely one of the lucky ones! I always wish I was one of those people that could have one square of chocolate and not the whole bar+ Hopefully one day!!

My surgeon did say that kicking a sugar habit is harder than kicking a carb habit. I loved my sweets. But now after surgery my stomach will not tolerate anything sweet! Even though I am happy about it, it was SUPER rough the first few days since all my liquid meds were all sweet fruit flavored. I can barely stand Jello :(. BUT maybe the same will happen to you, you just never know until post-surgery. Just keep your eyes on the prize.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
