How to quit smoking

Recommended Posts

I have just begun my journey to weight loss surgery. I have been informed that I have to quit smoking otherwise they will not do the surgery. How did the smokers out there quit. I am 48 years old and have been smoking since my early 20's.

Thank you.

I smoked for a very long time and was fairly heavy smoker. I went on Champix (Chantex in the USA?). It was a miracle for me. I have been smoke free for about 4 years.

I have just begun my journey to weight loss surgery. I have been informed that I have to quit smoking otherwise they will not do the surgery. How did the smokers out there quit. I am 48 years old and have been smoking since my early 20's.

I always considered myself a social smoker but was a social smoker for 25 years. I am 46. I would smoke about 2 sigs in the afternoon with wine. If I went out on weekend and drank too much it could be half a pack in one night.

When I decided to have surgery ( took 3 years off and on to decide) I knew I had to stop the drinks since they were the slippery slope for smoking. So 8 months prior I did it cold turkey. Did I slip once and awhile? Yes.

I know they (insurance) wants you to have quit for a year. My nut asked the questions when filling out the info for the insurance company. She told me most insurance co want a year. I told her 8 to 9 months and she put a year considering it was about 2 months till I had surgery anyway.

To answer your question it was 3 things that helped me quit. My 9 year old son. My being totally scared to have surgery complications (smokeing increases this) and knowing if I was going to loose weight I know drinking would hinder that. Thus stopping the drinking it would stop the smoking because for me I never craved a sig unless I was drinking.

I am 8 months out. I am down 108 pounds. 20 from goal. I have had a cocktail a few times but have stoped the smokeing. I know this will always be a struggle so I have to watch this always. Good luck to you and wish you a happy journey!

Also, there is a great website called whyquit.com. I read every single thing on this website, including all of the true life stories of lung cancer, early deaths, etc. You have to get in the mindset that you really want to quit and this website helps. I also joined a forum with others trying to quit.

I also quit smoking 2 weeks ago, cold turkey. My surgeon will not preform the surgery otherwise.

Google the book Stop smoking the easy way by Allen Carr. My husband and I quit last January with it when I had previously failed at ecigs Patches and chantix. You may find a free eBook copy as I did. Easiest quit ever.. will never go back

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
