Why is my doctor pushing for bypass?

Recommended Posts

My doctor pushed for the sleeve for me, not that I wanted bypass, but he said when it comes down to it, the losses are not hugely different and he typically recommends bypass to folks with comorbidiities which I had none, other than slightly low levels of the good cholesterol. Do you have boarderline or have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or even painful joints? I'm sure there are a zillion other comorbidiities they are concerned with but these are the big ones.

My knees are not exactly happy about carrying around my 250pound body. They are painful some days, and fine the next day, so I'm pretty sure with weight loss I will be fine. Other than that I am perfectly healthy, I should say no comorbidities, as I can not say I am healthy coz I am morbidly obese. And I agree, doctors should offer the sleeve before bypass as sleeve is less invasive and god forbid it doesn't work it can always be converted to bypass...go figure :P

Why have all of you picked the sleeve and not the BP?

Hi Amy!

I can only speak for myself as why I prefer the sleeve. With bypass I hate the idea of malabsorption, and I do not think I want to deal with taking Vitamins and injections till the end of my life or at least for a long time. And going in for bloodwork often...

But I never knew the complication rate is higher with the sleeve??? Is that true???

The heartburn is true...unfortunately, it can happen as far as I know, but sleeve can be converted to bypass if GERD occur. (not that I'd love that but if I had to deal with GERD probably it would come down to that...)

Speaking from personal experience... I had the Gastric Bypass procedure done... in 2005. I lost quite a bit of weight, but never got down to my goal of 145 pounds. I followed instructions.. was very active the whole nine yards. Didn't have any issues with deficiencies ( Vitamins, low blood, etc. ) was relatively healthy. Just could never lose the last 30 lbs. I started out ( back then) at about 260-268 got down to about 176-180 ( roughly). Size wise.. .I went from a 24/26W to a 10/12 depending on the make, cut..etc. Didn't have any hair loss issues due to the absorption issue and definitely have not had to use injections since then. Unfortunately... I did not research my surgeon as thoroughly as I should or could have. Was not as "internet/youtube" savvy as I am now.. (just kidding). But at the time I was SO elated about being approved( after a year and half of fighting with insurance companies) I just ran with the first doctor I found.

Now fast forward about 9 years later. After my endoscopy with my current surgeon found that not only was my original pouch made too big to begin with...she got my bowels all twisted up ( don't think she really knew what she was doing) and had some serious issues going on that I didn't even know about. Bowel obstruction can kill you.. I had a friend who had the RNY ( not to scare you) just giving you the facts. We had the same doctor and her bowel obstruction got REAL about 5 years ago... she almost died! I was VERY blessed that Dr. Alexander caught mine before it got too bad and I had to be hospitalized. So not only did he revise my Gastric Bypass to a Sleeve he had to go in and undo what the previous doctor screwed up. My surgery was roughly 5 hours long when usually its about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

My suggestion.. and I think this is the consensus on this thread... GET A SECOND OPINION and quick. Not to second guess him or his practice...but this is your health and your LIFE and you want to make sure you are making a VERY educated decision before you lay down on that operating table. I had to endure the pains of bariactric surgery twice because I did not take the time to REALLY and truly learn about all of my options.

She lied and told me that I could not ever have anything laproscopically done due to previous hernia surgery/scar tissue... so she opened me up. Dr. Alexander ( my new doctor) quickly informed me that I was a VERY good canidate for lap surgery and since he converted to the lap procedure in the last 11 years he had NEVER had to "open" any one up. And even his patients with severe complications still have been able to have it done via lap. Also... I had major gas, acid reflux and digestion issues since having the Bypass and as of right now... I haven't had any of my old symptoms.. its just been 11 days so might be too early to tell but so far so good.

I said all of that to simply say... Gastric Bypass does not necessarily guarantee you extreme weight loss. I never made it to goal and gained all of my weight back except for about 20 lbs. Was I perfect...no.......but I followed instructions I would say 80% of the time...worked out..watched what I ate and still did not have the success I wanted. I am VERY confident that this time around things will be different. My doctor made sure that he gave me as much restriction as humanly possible.. .lol... WOW can I tell the difference. And I love the fact that with the Sleeve they remove the part of the stomach that produces Gherlin... so you are not hungry. I have to remind myself to eat most days..Looking forward to utilizing my tool... I know all of the do's and don'ts of weight loss surgery and I am sure this time I will reach my goal of 145 lbs. within the next 12 months.

First of all I totally disagree with your doctor. The truth is you can regain weight after any weight loss surgery it's all about the program that you're following. My friend just recently had a gastric sleeve and she's lost 80 pounds

Maybe this doctor hasn't done a lot of sleeves....I had a friend about 8 years ago have the bypass and she didn't want it done she wanted the band I told her maybe her doctor wasn't doing the band but now when I look at this years later it was prob because she was a diabetic and she only weighed about 202lbs and was 5'3...she looked gauty looking I felt bad for her and she had complications

Yes I know there are plenty of doctors in the UK, but as I said in an earlier post on the first page I am going to have this surgery in the country of my origin, and there is only one doctor who do these surgeries, even he is travelling there from Austria to do these surgeries. But it cost half as much as in the UK - I could not afford to do it in the UK.

Second opinion. Sounds like the doc is pushing for HIS comfort level, not YOURS. Find another doc that is more willing to do sleeves, or at least willing to sit down with you and HONESTLY explain your options and WHY a bypass would be better (without pinning it on YOU like saying "you'll just be back in 2 years.")

Well, here is my two cents for what it is worth. I agree with everyone that you need a second opinion. I actually went to a surgeon about 3 years ago thinking that I wanted the band. He told me that I should absolutely have the bypass and wouldn't even discuss the sleeve with me (maybe it was too new?). So I started on all the pre-op stuff, and then one day I just decided that I didn't want him deciding for me. I wanted to find someone who I could work WITH, not a dictator. So I left, never looked back, and eventually found the surgeon who will make me a new person tomorrow. So so so glad I waited! Check out your options. Please do that for yourself. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
