Flipped port?

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery 12/15 to fix a flipped port. I went in for a fill on 12/11 and it didn't go so well. He was thinking that it was because I have so much weight to lose. Then it was obvious that the needle was touching the back of the port.

How it flipped? well actually we are pretty sure that it happened when I hit a deer in November. (11th, ironicly a month before my fill appt). When the seatbelt restrained me, it pulled on my stomach and ripped my sutures that were holding my port to my abdominal wall. He sent me for an abdominal xray right from my appt. Surgery was scheduled that afternoon for monday.

I am still recovering. I feel like I have been carved up like a turkey! The port site had to be moved over about 2 inches to get put into decent tissue. Plus I am very bruised.

Hi there! You should definately call your doctor w/ your concerns.

My port was flipped upside down. When my dr attempted to give me a fill, we just heard the sound of metal. She said it sounded like it was upside down, which was confirmed w/ a cat scan. I also have a port infection. They scheduled an appt for me to have surgery at the hospital. She was going to go in, turn the port over, and attempt cleaning out the infected area.

However, I lost my job (due to my complications), and my insurance! The hospital canceled my appt because I was in the self pay boat, and unable to pay the whole amount for the surgery.

My dr went ahead and did the procedure in her office. She went in and flipped it over and sewed me back up - only charging me for the fill itself which was $100!

So.... it all depends on your dr. Obviously I would be in a rough spot if my dr weren't so understanding and caring.

Keep us updated!

NataliesMommy;

Your Dr. actually did the procedure in her office? She only charged you for a fill? I didn't know a procedure like that could be done in an office setting. This isn't a Dr.; she's an ANGEL!! That is one woman that cares and takes the Hypocratic oathe to heart and what a BIG heart she has, too!! Next time you see her give her a handshake from me and thank her.

Also, ask her where I can find someone like that? I had my surgery done in MX and I'm finding it impossible to find anyone that will do a port revision so access can be accomplished more easily. It actually sits sideways and I've got pictures to prove it. I'd pay more than a fill price, but some drs. are down right GREEDY and exorbatant with their prices!!

Tacy M.

Hey this sounds familiar to me. I recently started feeling a bruised feeling in my left side. I never could feel my port before and now I feel like a hard ball feeling at that area on my side. Is that what you are talking about' date=' a bump feeling? Could it be my port has flipped? How would I know? I am going to call the doctor. It still feels tender on my side. Any ideas?[/quote']

Sounds a lot like me. My port is on the right and I can feel it a little. Recently though, I have a little bump or knot more towards the surface. It's a little tender but I'm pretty sure it's not the port cause it's in a little different spot but still at my port incision scar area. I'm 6 months out and I don't want to think its an infection this late in the game. Any thoughts or similar things please let me know.

Thanks

I have not been told that my port is flipped, but the last month the area around the port is very sore and burns a lot. Any one else have the burning sensation? Keep in mind I've had the band for 10 months.

There are several ppl including myself that have soreness in that same area. Could it be a coincidence that we have this pain, or could it have already been known that we would experience this feeling as a part of having the band. The reason I say that is, when I told my Dr about what I was feeling when I la y on that side, he said Oh Yea, You Will Feel The Port. He then said You know that you'll have to deal with something as a result of surgery. You can't have your cake and eat it to. I felt like crying. Nobody ever told me that I would have to forever live in pain.

I have no idea what happened to mine it took the Dr about 1 hour to find where to fill. He said it slipped down. About 30 holes later I got my fill didn't feel anything but seen what he did was not good. Hubby was mad. But I didn't care he will find it right off next time.

Oh man, that looks awful. Glad you didn't feel that. My Dr. has never said that I have a slipped band ,but it took this new Dr. a little longer to put 2cc back in. I have always believed that I have a flipped port. I'm feeling better now than I did on my last post, but I still don't know my outcome

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
