Hey all, I'm Bree. I had my surgery on Feb. 7. I'm 22, 5'7". I started at 247, and a week out, I am 232. My surgeon had me on Clear liquids for the first week, and every week I advance. I'm on full liquids now, then pureed, then soft, then regular foods.

The clear diet was terrible. I was so hungry but felt like I shouldn't be eating as much so I would stop myself. I had the worst stomach cramps. The kind you get when you are severely hungry. They actually hurt! So on my followup appointment, I brought it to my surgeons attention, and he switched me a day early to full liquids and said that would help, and so far, it has.

The problem now is that I feel like I'm eating too much. I haven't felt full yet. I am just eating creamed Soups and pudding and things like that that I am allowed. I do not want those stomach cramps again. I have started Multivitamins and some optisource Protein Shakes. I'm just not feeling full and its bothering me. I can eat a whole can of cream of chicken Soup and still want more.

Help?

That does not make you a glutenous pig. Your sleeve is starting to work right. You need to separate head hunger from real hunger... It is amazing what our eyes can tell our brains which sends a signal to your stomach.....Feel it out. you will find for now you are getting enough...soon you will know what is really head hunger because it will happen to you like it has happened to most all of us...Then the real work begins. :)

You're still very soon after surgery - your stomach is still healing so you may not feel that "full" feeling yet. That's why it's important to follow your doc's instructions with regard to measurements of food you're allowed. My doc reminded me - "measure your food and remember, you don't always have to eat it all." Take small bites and slow down your eating (I use the Eat Slower app on my phone and set it to one minute intervals - you take one bit per minute).

Also, "full" may feel differently than it did pre-op. My full feeling is very uncomfortable - I try to avoid "full". Sometimes my nose will run or I do a hiccup/burp thing while I'm eating or I feel a poke in my stomach - those are my signs to stop. If I eat past that point, I can get uncomfortable.

I read something interesting on this site - rather than feeling full, it's better to eat to the point of ridding yourself of the hunger.

Are you tracking your food intake? I use The app My Fitness Pal. It has a bar code scanner function that's really cool. You may be surprised how little you're actually eating in a day. As long as you're not pushing yourself to eat unapproved foods and making a solid attempt to get in the appropriate amount of Protein your doctor is requesting I don't see why you should feel the need to neglect yourself. If you're hungry eat something approved (rich in protein). My Doctor's nutritionist had me stay under 900 calories and aim for 75+ grams of protein. I had a hard time reaching that goal after surgery. You may find comfort in tracking your food intake. Try it?

I am having the same worries.

Seems like most are talking about 1/4 c of this 2 T of that and at 9 days post-op yesterday I had 1c pea Soup and 1 c pudding in under 25 mins. Today I set my phone to notify meals as between Water and meals I feel like something is going in my mouth all the time. They haven't recommended no. of calories (I seem to be at 850/day) but I am supposed to strive for 100 gr of protein/day.

But really, could two cups of slime(pudding/soup) be ok?

ps If I didn't have my leak test on cd I won't know I had a sleeve. I had no pain, no nausea, no cramps.

Are you confusing hunger with acid maybe? That happens quite ofter. There were times in the beginning I thought I was hungry, but it didn't make sense - I had just eaten or maybe I just had a shake, so I shouldn't feel hunger. You may want to talk to your doctor - he may tell you to try an acid reducer or a proton pump inhibitor. I find if I feel hunger when I don't think I should, it goes away with an acid reducer.

I would advise you to do this, Measure 1/2 cup of cream Soup ( for instance) Don;t warm it up yet,

Take an acid reducer like zantex ( its great for immediate and 24 hours results)

Go for a 10-20 minute walk ( dogs love this) While walking drink some Water like 6 oz

Once your walk has done heat up your food.

eat slow like overly slow,

You may not feel FULL because your stomach has just been traumatized. I did not feel real restriction for about 6 weeks.

Enjoy your 1/2 cup.

Find something to do afterwards. maybe another small walk

Then eat again in 2-3 hours.

Enjoy your life!

I had that issue as well. it wasn't acid (on prilosec), and wasn't head hunger (actual hunger cramps), but for the life of me nobody would believe me. You can't be hungry they said. Sorry, bitterness crept in there.

Anyway, it gets better as soon as you get to the puréed stage. You may still be a little hungry, but not nearly as bad. Once you get to solids you'll finally get satiated.

Unfortunately though, I had to just grin and bear it until that stage. It may be different for you though, it could be acid or something. We're all different after all. But, I believe you.

finally someone who understands! I know it isn't acid. And everyone is saying the same thing to me. I guess that is my only option, but honestly, it's making me regret this whole thing...

It will pass. I'm only four ahead of you (sleeved on 2/3) and I'm feeling REALLY good now.

I just started pureed foods and it's much better. I was hungry as well and feeling frustrated but it did pass, and quickly. I can very much feel the restriction now and tell my sleeve is REALLY working. It is the "tool" everyone described it as. If you pay attention, and it's very easy to, you should be fine.

Give it a few more days, you will feel better!

I get that same feeling, but its generally gas or thirst for me. It is exactly like painfully hunger I felt pre op. Try upping fluids.

As you get into solids, that hunger should be dampened. You may still get hungry later on. When you are able to eat cheese, do try and make sure you have it (or other fats) in your diet. Fat in the digestive system releases a metabolite that signals satiety to the brain and, viola, hunger no more. A little fat is good for us. I use cheese now as a way to stop hunger cold when I need to control calorie consumption. Sometimes the hunger just gets really noisy and I want to eat something every hour.

Thanks guys! Everyone looked at me like I had 5 heads when I talked about the pains. Its good to know other people had the same issue.

I'll use your tips. Water is so hard for me. I just bought some crystal light and light apple juice. Maybe that will make me want to drink more.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
