I think I lost about 10-12 pounds also. However, my surgeon said he didn't even want me to TRY to lose weight until at least the first-third month post-op. He said you only need to be concerned with HEALING during that time; the (possible) swelling and the "trauma" of surgery will likely keep you from "overdoing it" during that time, as things will not go down as well and you'll feel full rather quickly. At about 3 months is when he actually was interested in starting to track my weight loss. Until then, they didn't even mention the scale!!! I think that is a good approach; you want everything to heal properlly MOST OF ALL and you need nutrients and calories (and vitamins) to accomplish that before you try to limit your body's intake. If you lose during that time, all well and good, but don't WORK AT losing during your post-op period. You'll do best in the long run if you concentrate on healing as your first priority.

Best of wishes for you as you become the thinner, healthier person you will be very soon!!!

I lost 26 pounds in the first week after surgery. Then I have not lost anyting and I am 3 weeks and two days. I have actual gain 5 pounds however I am sure that is all Water weight,. I have been really swollen for a few days. I am having a hard time keeping food down right now. I can keep the Soups down and refried Beans sit really well but nothing else. Hang in there I was told that the weight will start comming off about 6 weeks in to it and not to get frustrated.

I was 2 weeks post-op yesterday so I weighed myself. I lost 4 lbs. I thought it was 5 then I realized it was only 4. My official appt is tomorrow but I was so mad yesterday. I had a feeling I would be one of the ones to not loose much weight even with the bypass. I had a band for 7 years and even though my eating changed it took 7 years to loose 50 pounds. I'm so disgusted. I did the Opti fast diet which consists of 4 little juice box type drinks a day and I didn't barely loose anything then either. It's just so frustrating. I know everyone will want to say it doesn't matter but for me it does. I'm so sick of eating so little yet being the fattest one in the damn room. It's not fair. My thyroid checks out fine so I don't know what the heck to do. I'm just venting. Thanks for listening.

I had my official 2 week post op today and I am in fact down just 7 lbs in 17 days. I'm disgusted! Its the culmination for me of years and years of dieting disappointment. My ultimate fear has been realized. I've blamed myself for being fat. Doctors discard patients issues and blame it on overweight. I had the band for 7 years and lost very little but my food intake decreased. I could never understand why at weight watchers I would be the one to lose .5 lbs to someone else's 4 lbs. I look around me and everyone eats a full plate of food. I usually eat 1/3 of my meal. Yet I'm the fattest one. I feel like I failed at the band and now I feel like the gastric bypass will be just another 1 lb a week situation and that's if I'm lucky. My roommate at the hospital was there today and she was down over 20 lbs. Again I'm venting. I don't want to hear it's alright. Because to me it's not alright. This was my last hope. If I can't loose weight with RNY what the hell else is there. So I get to not eat, not drink, and I still get to be fat. I still get to have all the wonderful benefits being fat brings. I just don't get it. No one has answers. No doctor ever does. No doctor ever has. Just once I wanted to be the one who drops 20 lbs. what's even more bizarre is I expected the doc to do blood work or urine or something at 2 weeks post op. The appointment was not what I expected. I was supposed to see the dietician but she cancelled. So here I am. Wondering what's ok to eat on stage 4. I don't see them again for 4 weeks. I can't even believe I'm typing all this nor do I expect anyone to sit and read all this Whiney crap. I'm just devastated. I needed to come to a place where others understand. I don't know if anyone out there can say they only lost 7 lbs after 17 days. If you sat through this woe is me session. Thank you for listening.

I wish I had the words to help you feel better. I can only try and empathize your dilemma.

I will ask you though if you are taking account that it might be that other peoples stats are different to yours...the more weight someone has to lose the more they'll lose in the first few weeks.

I would have liked to have lost more than 12 lbs in my first two weeks, but I have been on a pre-op diet for at least six weeks prior to surgery, now I know that counts, so I just sucked that up. I checked others who had surgery the same time as me and the "big loses" were definitely heavier than me.

I'm not medical or an expert, just struggling along with the rest of us. But, I do know that physiologically and biologically with the operation we have just had and the tiny amounts of food we eat, it is impossible not to lose weight. It will happen.

My check up is next week and I sure hope they do blood work on me...so I do think your aftercare was a bit lacking...did you get to tell them your fears about your loss? If so, what did they say?

Like I say, I'm no expert but if you need someone to sound off to, you just sound off whenever you need to.

Xxx

Thank you SnowDaisy for your response. I too have been dieting for a while on a low food intake diet so I get that I lost weight hleading up to this but it's just so hard to stay positive when I'm trying so hard but don't reap results. I will get past this I'm just bummed right now. The aftercare thing was very strange. I wonder if that is standard at the 2 week mark? What's worse is my blood pressure was 96 over 60.

My 2 week check up was basic as well. I had been told it would be though so that was all I was expecting. I was told blood work would be done at 3/6/9/12 months out and then yearly. I have my first prerequisite already for my 3 mth I did forget to ask them to check the boxes for my thyroid levels at the same time so I will have to get that done before I do my bloodwork.

I am also a slow loser :( my first week week I lost 11 lbs I was so happy! 2nd week 2.2 lbs and last week 2 lbs :(!

Hoping next week will be better because after I set back I am now allowed back on the treadmill!

Thank you so much. I didn't realize they waited until 3 months to do bloodwork. The slow loser thing is really crushing my spirit. I hope to get past this but I'm just so overcome with frustration.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
