Soups and protein

Hello. I am 5 days post - op. I was surprised to see Tomato Soup as one of the food options. Does anyone know what other types of Soup would be considered whatever is acceptable for post op. I was under the impression Clear Liquids would be broth only. If Tomato soup made with lactaid milk is ok I'm wondering what else is. Also can Protein Powder be put in the soup? I'm currently only getting approx 300 calories a day and only 30 Protein so I'm trying to find ways to add it. I put it in sugar free pudding and it was fine. Last question is. I was using Muscle Milk powder but I'm almost out of it. What is everyone's favorite or best choice for protein.

I am on Day 6 and on full liquids (not clear). I use Isopure for my Protein. I love it because it is 26g in one little scoop--- I have choc., vanilla, and unflavored. Good stuff.

I was able to have cream of chicken or cream of mushroom Soup but it had to be strained. I used skim milk instead of regular milk.

Thank you for your responses. I was going to try Tomato Basil Soup until I forgot to check the sugars. How many sugars is acceptable in something.

Thank you for the Soup ideas! I'm day 6 post op and I can't stop thinking about food. I'm sooo hungry ( or am I just head hungry?) I thought it was just clear liquids, so all I've had are Protein Shake w 1/2 c Water, broth, Jello, Popsicle and lots of water. I'm going to go to the store and get some cream Soups. Is yogurt ok? Great Protein there. Can't wait to feel 100% to start exercising and get my mind off food.

Fergie in my paperwork from my docs I was surprised to see Tomato Soup on there. I thought it was clears also. They listed Tomato Soup with low fat milk. I used tomato soup with Lactaid fat free milk. They said milk adds Protein. So I made soup and you can store the rest for later. Then today I am trying tomato basil soup with the milk. It's going down good so far. They also listed an egg drop soup. I haven't tried that yet. Everywhere it says no cream Soups. I'm not sure why as I would think tomato soup is creamy. There sure is a lot to learn.

You can add unflavored protein to your soup but if the soup is hot the protein foams and sort of thickens the soup. I didn't like it that way. Also don't microwave the soup or heat it w/protein already added or it foams. If the soup is only warm it mixes better and you don't notice it as much. You might want to try adding 1/2 scoop instead of a full scoop and go from there. Experiment to see what works for you. Even adding a little protein will help over the course of a whole day. One person months ago said he put a full scoop of protein in a little bowl and throughout the day he added a little from the bowl to EVERYTHING he ate. It added 25 grams of protein without any trouble at all. :-)

Hi if you use cream Soups they must be 98% fat free and then blended in the blender and strained before consuming.

I have used powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup powder when I was on that part of the program and it has 20g of Protein in it and you must follow directions on how to make it or it comes out weird.

For Protein shakes I use Rob Roy Protein Powder that has 25g of Protein in each scoop and with a cup of skim milk it makes it 33g of protein in each shake. I use the chocolate or vanilla and add extract flavors to give different flavors to it if I want a change.

If you drink Crystal Light in your Water you can always add a spoonful of unflavored protein to that and that helps get your protein in for the day too.

Make sure that it is whey isolate at least that is what I was told. I would ask your nutritionist what they recommends for you to get and maybe where you should purchase it. They would have the best answer for you.

I would check with your nutritionist of what Protein they want you to purchase and where they suggest you purchase it at.

I've been told to use whey isolate but your nutritionist may want you to use something different so they would be the best person to talk to about this and the wisest person to make sure you are getting the proper nutrition at this stage.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
