I've been reading a lot of gastric bypass stories and I saw a trend of ladies complaining of Hair loss. I know you can't take solid Vitamins at least 3 months post op and liquid vitamins are a must. Has anyone ever thought of or tried a liquid Biotin supplement? I'm afraid of losing my hair. :(

My surgeon recommends Flinstones chewables. No liquids. All of my Vitamins are in solid form.

Post op hair loss is thinning similar to pregnancy about 3-6 months after the surgery. My MD suggested Biotin, coq10 and zinc but don't start till after you can take mushy food. hair thinning does not happen to everyone. Also recommended is Bariatric Advantage powdered Vitamins that you can mix with any liquid but it is flavored (have not tried it yet) but Vitamins will be required for life.

Stress of surgery in and of itself (any surgery) often causes Hair loss. I noticed that my bariatric Vitamins (Celebrate chewable) has Biotin in it. I am only three weeks post op and lose the same amount of hair I always did which I always contributed to my thyroid disorder. Just meet your Vitamin and Protein requirements and IF any hair loss occurs, I have heard it is usually only a temporary side effect.

Hair loss from the stress of surgery followed by rapid weight loss won't occur until 3-4 months out and then will continue for 3-6 months afterward. :-p My hair started falling out at approximately 4 mos. I'm eight months out and it appears to be slowing but it's hard to tell. I have baby-fine hair so, after losing quite a bit of it, it's REALLY thin right now. Still, it's a fair trade for losing over 100 pounds! :-)

I had surgery two and half years ago, and never lost any of my hair. My doctor also told me not to take any vitamins as to quote him " you'll, be getting all you need from good quality food and thinking about every mouthful" we'll he's right! My hair now is actually in better condition than before surgery!

Funnily enough, a few years ago ( a traumatic divorce) I did lose lots of hair, so I know it's not pleasant at all, but it all grew back! Good luck with whatever you decide to do, the surgery is a life saver.

I take chewable vitamins. Never had liquid at all but every surgeon is different. I am 9 months post op and have had minimal Hair loss. I had a haircut this week and the girl commented on how nice and thick my hair was. I thought I was thinning alittle but evidently it's not that bad! ;)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
