Stall? Or am I doing something wrong?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 8 weeks out from surgery and I've been around the same weight for about 3 weeks now. I'll lose two pounds one day then the next day I gain it back it has been like this for weeks and is driving me crazy. When I got the all clear to eat solid foods it was really hard for me to get Protein in but lately I've been getting a good amount of protein in and still nothing. I force myself to drink Water, I usually drink 40oz a day and I've been taking all my meds so I don't know what else I should be doing. My doctor has advised me to not exercise too much right now since when I started working out I began to get a lot of lower abdomen pain so I'm sure not being able to workout has put me in this stall but it's just very frustrating! I've lost about 24lbs since surgery and I know everyone's process is different but it seems that everyone has lost much more at 8 weeks. I'm beginning to feel a little bit of regret and coming really down on myself because now I'm thinking it's just me. I know this is a process but I feel like I'm up against a wall and have no where else to go. I'm trying to stay positive but it isn't easy. I just want to know if anyone else is experiencing this or has at the earlier stages. Also if anyone has any advice on what else I could be doing or not doing correctly I would love to hear some input. Thanks!

First of all, congratulations on your weight loss, I think it's great!! Most docs want at least 60 ounces of Water a day, you may want to try upping it, unless your doc told you different. I experienced a stall, which lasted about 3 weeks a few weeks ago. I think you may be experiencing a stall as well. Don't be too hard on yourself, follow your plan and the advise of your doctor. We can't predict when a stall occurs or how long it will last, the only thing we can control is our response to it. Keep your chin up, I think you are doing great!!

Are you tracking what you are eating in myfitness pal or another method? If so do you know how many carbs and Protein and fat you are eating daily? I know for me if I am not careful the carb number really creeps up and weight loss slows.

Your surgery was 2 days before mine. When you got the all clear for solids, what did you eat, cuz you said you had a hard time with the Protein. Did you do a lot of carbs? Carbs are the true enemy.

Check with the doc or nutritionist, keep a food journal and avoid the carbs as much as possible.

Don't be discouraged, and don't say this won't work for you. In less than eight weeks, you've lost 24 pounds. When was the last time you did that on your own? Celebrate that, but talk with your medical team for guidance.

Thank you for the responses and encouraging words. I'm trying my hardest to get more Water in it just gets difficult sometimes. Nurse_B how far out are you?

I haven't been using any of those to track my food but I will start, it could be the carb or calorie intake I need to be more cautious if certain things I'm eating I guess thank you!

It is hard to get all the fluids and Protein Drinks, etc, in. I have other posts about wanting to guzzle Water, but can't. Many people can't get all the liquids in, but keep at it. It will happen! Head up!

Not carbs.. 64 ozs liquids and 80 grams protein.. Pain in belly when exercising but surgeon said it was my belly hernia repair he did? My NUT made me put my scale in my cars trunk! Lol .. Good move as today I weighed an entered ONEDERLAND --and 20" gone! Trust this works.. Stay on plan.. But download the free Myfitnesspal!!

At a stall as well. Going on 2 weeks now. I've had one before and I know that when it breaks, I will start losing again. Even though you're in a stall, you're still losing inches. Hang in there.

I stalled for 3weeks starting the end of my third week and through a lot of trial and error I found I cannot eat more than 50grams of carbs/day. So now the only carbs I eat are in my south beach meal bars which aren't bad. Otherwise it's all Protein with the occasional vegetable. Been doing that for 6 days and am already down 5 more pounds. I also won't allow my self to eat anything until I finish a whole bottle of Water, good to have an incentive ;)

I am also 8 weeks out and feel the same as you. I have lost 28 lbs. Intellectually, I know this is good, but I was able to lose 40lbs prior to surgery, It is discouraging to see that others have lost so much more. I feel like I have been on a stall since surgery, or rather can't get started. I document everything I eat. My nutritionist says I am doing everything right. Glad to know I am not the only one. Could it be my age - 52? Has anyone ever had this slow weight loss, but eventually reached their goal?

I was sleeved 12 days ago and the number on the scale hasn't moved in two days. I had an appointment on Thursday and I was assured that I was right on track and doing everything correctly. They did say that non-clear liquids must continue for 2 weeks, instead of the one that was in the paperwork they gave me pre-op. Exercise is going great, but I have had a little bit of insomnia the last few nights. I feel lighter and more energetic, but at the same time I feel that the Protein Shakes aren't satiating me. I bought some of the Soups they said were okay for this phase but honestly I don't like eating them because they're so high in carbs and sodium. So its Water, Powerade Zero, Protein shakes, a cup of coffee here and there, and more water, protein shakes and Powerade Zero until 2/3/14. I don't feel hungry like ready to go binge on something crazy, but I have to say this limited menu is starting to feel a little bland and even after I eat I feel my stomach growling. I've wondered if its possible that I'm not eating enough and my body thinks I'm starving. I think I am going to stop weighing myself so often because its just making me mad. Despite the weight I have lost I'm still having to wear my pre-op clothes sizes...and that's irritating too. I knew that occasional stalls were part of this, but I didn't expect this so soon! If the scale didn't move and I could fit into at least one pant size smaller I think that would help to ease this frustration...but oh well. Nothing I can do but keep on keeping on, do what I'm supposed to do and hope for the best. Thanks for posting this topic!

Your Water intake sounds low. I know it sounds crazy but it matters - kinda "flushes" out the fat! Aim for 80 oz say my NUT and MD - maybe see if yours have a different goal.

When I was at my week 8, I hit a stall for three weeks.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
