Thinking of doing the 5:2 plan

Recommended Posts

Me too, I actually have no desire to eat most of the time. I was 2 lbs below goal this morning. That was a great feeling!

I LOVE 5:2

Today's my first day for the 2 in the 5:2 plan. I started Jenny Craig last week so I could kickstart my plan to get back down to my goal weight with a minimal amount of distractions. So far, so good, it's a considerable amount of food for a sleever. So much so that it feels a lot more like planned eating than a diet. Since JC supports 5 days on program and 2 days "on your own" I figured the on my own would be 500 calories or less between noon and 9 on Mondays and Thursdays.

I'm actually going to restrict to liquids with the bariatric liquids/mushies I ate post surgery and some fasting support products. I have a couple of friends who sell products for a company that also promotes 2 days of fasting per week. So today I drank the clear fasting liquid I got from them (with electorlytes, b Vitamins, etc.) and then had a liquid Protein Soup for lunch. I'll have their shake and some WonderSlim stuff for the rest of my food today. I'm thinking that going to liquids will work for my head and keep me off the snacking train plus I'm thinking it will also be good for feeling my restriction on the days after. I'm also terrible at getting enough liquids in and I think focusing on that 2 days a week will get me on a good habit for the other 5.

So far, so good. I felt a little weird and then realized it was not having my morning coffee which I'd passed on because I add half and half. Had a coffee this afternoon and with the calories of the Soup I'm feeling like my normal self.

Excited to see where this takes me. 5:2 seems like such a manageable way to go for the long term even after I get back to goal.

Keep in mind that the 2 in the 5:2 is eating normal/less including lots of veggies to help keep us from burning out on a "diet". The fast refers to the open time period where you rest your digestion. It is not eating "nothing all day" like some fasts... it is realy calorie restriction with a fasting window. They recommend 500-550 for women, not less. my 2 cents.

Yep. The thing that allowed the 5:2 to start working for me was the fastin window. Stop eating at 9pm then nothing but fluids till after Noon the next day gave me a long fasting window. Then I was satisfied eatin 500 calories from after noon till diner. For my two cents I would use those two days to gain control over your normal eating habits and focus on the fasting window. Good luck. Keep us posted on your progress.

I've read most of the various 5:2 threads over the months. What I am curious about is exercise. I try to workout 5-6 days a week: tues, thurs, sat are full body workouts with a trainer and mon, wed, or sun are cardio on my own. Does exercise change how you follow the 5:2 plan?

Just my 2 cents but Jenny Craig is definitely not a Protein based way to eat and protein is supposed to be the foundation for weight loss surgery patients. Jenny Craig focuses on frozen vegetables in most of its meals with a little carb and a little protein (cheaper for them to make their food that way). I think we should be eating mostly protein with a little vegetable and very little carb.

Good point, scarlett333. I track my Protein with JC and add extra in place of milk and fruit to target 80 per day. I figured out which JC foods don't have enough (like the cereal) and have replaced those with either the higher Protein options or a WonderSlim replacement.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
