When did you head back to the gym?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, am two weeks post-op now and feeling so much better. I'm really keen to get back to the gym but wondering if I should leave it another week to make sure everything is healed and settled in before I go for a work out? I feel fine, but you never know whats going on under the skin and it might need leaving another week. I'm just curious to know how soon after surgery others started working out again? Did your routines change at all? I don't have as much energy as before, so am really going to need to start slow and build up to what my pre-banded routine. Will give the Dr an email today to confirm with him too that it's ok to go back to working out....curious to see how others found it though?

Soft aerobic workouts should be no problem. Treadmill, elliptical on low settings should be fine. Just no lifting, bending or stressing the abs for a few more weeks?

I had a appointment with my surgeon exactly 1 week after my surgeon, for him to check my incisions, etc....it was then, 1 week after surgery, he cleared me to go back to the gym, soak in the tub, swim, anything I wanted to do...only to be careful of heavy lifting...only light to mild...

Definitely wait on your doctor's approval. Everyone is different in the healing process and you don't want to hurt yourself. We got plenty of time to work out after we are all better lol

My surgeon said walking only for 6 weeks. I felt better before that, but he said absolutely NO. So definitely check with your doctor to see what his/her plan is for you.

6 weeks sounds about right. Am going to drop him an email as he originally said lots of walking first. I know if I get in the gym I'll want to go all put.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
