Day One of the Pre-Op Diet: An Emotional Ramble

So I began my journey to get a lap band back in September, and honestly I've been trying to lose the weight for years(like most people) I thought I knew a good amount on nutritional facts. According to my nutritionist I do, but I feel not enough.

But as the days grew closer to my Pre Op diet start date I've been feeling more and more anxious, in fact I froze in the grocery store and almost had a melt down while staring blankly at frozen vegetables(you can laugh, I totally am).

Well it's Day One, and this isn't my first time working with Protein. The diet is attached to this post. High Protein, no carb, low sodium, sugar free.

But this is my first time on such a strict diet. I thought I had prepared myself for it, but I've never been more anxious and nervous in my life as if I'm going to fail.

I have all the tools to succeed and I have to reason with my self in order to convince myself that I can.

So I found this site, this is my first post so please go easy on me.

I guess what it boils down to, Is I just need to do what I've done my whole life and learn more in order to calm myself down.(I'm somewhat of a bookworm).

So if you don't mind me asking:

What are some good Snacks you found out you could eat? Or neat snacking ideas that are sugar free and fat free?

Were you this nervous before your operation?

Who all did you inform about your band?

I guess I'm just looking for answers, and people sharing a similar situation. (No time for support groups very busy)

I was totally nervous before my surgery. It was my first time ever having surgery.

I think as far as the preop diet goes, just eat the things on the list. You can do it. In the whole scheme of time it is just a blip on the radar. This is the time to prove to yourself that you CAN do it. After about the third day, your body will adjust and you won't feel so hungry. Some people say that cheating can stop your body from adjusting.

Most of the time, the purpose of the preop diet is to deplete your glycogen stores and thereby lose weight off of your liver. This will make the surgery easier for the surgeon. Don't take the chance.

Find your zen. Remember, hunger is just a sensation. Like being touched or pinched. It's a feeling. If you can just ignore it, it eventually goes away.

You'll be fine!

Yeah I by no means intend on cheating, it'd not be right for me. Luckily I work a lot so I have little free time and we are not allowed to eat on the floor. (I work in Oil & Gas manufacturing) so there is that working for me because there won't be much time to snack except outside of work.

It's just hard giving up the favorite Snacks haha.

But again, thanks! Means a lot. :)

I am still waiting for my insurance approval. I am also nervous about the pre op diet. I read over all these threads and so many people said get past the first three days and you will be ok. I won't risk my surgery by cheating. I figure I will drink lots of Water to fill me up. Please keep us informed on how you are doing. Good luck to you.

Around day two or three I was briefly a wreck, felt like I couldn't think straight or concentrate. Then a funny thing happened, my body adapted. From there it was smooth sailing and I lost 19 pounds in the two weeks prior to surgery.

I am still waiting for my insurance approval. I am also nervous about the pre op diet. I read over all these threads and so many people said get past the first three days and you will be ok. Hey Lyn! The Insurance approval is the best feeling in the world. Good luck to you! And Grats to making it this far! The Pre Op diet, I think has made me the most nervous out of anything in this procedure. And yeah, Thats what I've been doing today. Drinking water, and focus on my plans for today. Any moment I feel hungry I fetch my water bottle. I'll keep you updated. Thanks for your reply!

Thanks Brant! And 19 lbs! That's awesome! Did you exercise frequently? Or was that from diet alone? I exercise after work that's why I ask. And honestly, that's dead on how it feels for the most part right now. So it's nice to hear that there's a light in a few days haha.

Thanks Brant! And 19 lbs! That's awesome! Did you exercise frequently? Or was that from diet alone? I exercise after work that's why I ask. And honestly, that's dead on how it feels for the most part right now. So it's nice to hear that there's a light in a few days haha.

I exercised about three times a week and walked and took the stairs when I could to add some extra exercise and calories burned. You will get there, and it does get easier after the first couple days. Honestly those first couple days were the hardest part of my entire journey (other than the emotional wrangling in my own head as I finally convinced myself that I could and should have WLS).

Just wanted to check In. Day 4! I feel awesome, a lot more energy. I adjusted quickly. I still get cravings when I see something, and still feel uncomfortable in a grocery store, but I can say no and not second guess it. :) it feels good! Thanks!

I'm on day 6 of my liquid diet. So far so good. I am not nervous a little excited. I am just rolling with the punches now.

All liquid? Damn! Go you! I'm now on Day Five! It's crazy, I have adjusted. I feel comfortable now. I think back at how much I used to eat. I am SHOCKED. I am absolutely excited haha

I am on day 2 of my three week all liquid pre-op diet. Day one was really hard. If I had to do it over again I would have drank one more Protein shake mid-day. Today is a bit easier although I am having a hard time concentrating on my work and I feel tired. I am waiting for my body to adjust... hope it does soon! My surgery date is 2/10/2014. This is by far the hardest thing I have ever done in my life!! Must - stay - positive!! I CAN DO THIS!!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
