I just followed Dr's orders about what to eat and when then walked a lot. I've dropped 100 pounds in 3 months since surgery.

Brothamike, these forums are a great source of information but be careful. I read a ton of posts and many people write that they are having great results and the temptation is to have their experience become your expectation. I catch myself comparing my results to theirs and end up wondering what I am doing "wrong". In reality I am not doing anything wrong. I have been losing 5-6# a week which I have to remind myself is awesome. I will not lose 100# in three months, but I know I will get there. You have heard it over and over but if you want great results exercise, Water, and Protein are the keys. A good way to manage your expectations is to figure out your basil metabolic rate, your Dr may have given bit to you as part of the body composition scale. Next figure out what calories you burn through the day and what you consume. The difference is how many calories you burn a day. Your calorie deficit divided by 3,500 is the number of pounds you could lose a day or week.

Long story short, don't set your expectation too high and end up being disappointed.

I agree with MegaBob.

I am 3.75 months out. Down 67 pounds. 33 to go.

I have no schedule.

If I can do 67... I can do 33 more.

Just do the right thing every day. And you will get there.

My NP said ;

" no one is perfect...... But if you can look in. The mirror and say I am doing the right thing. MOST DAYS, MOST WEEKS, MOST MONTHS. You WILL GET THERE."

It is a life long marathon. Not a sprint to the end of next month.

14 DAY DIET IS GOING OK, 800 CALORIES REALLY ISNT THAT HARD. The first day of the diet was rough because i just switched to midnights so on top of being tired i was also hungry. Lost seven lbs in a week, which has me thinking maybe I can do this on my own without surgery but still gonna do the surgery. Not really getting nervous about the surgery itself but more that i will lose to much weight and will look worse then I do now. Here is some info 29 years old from New Jersey stared pre op diet at 260lbs down to 252. high b/p, back problems main reason for the surgery and also looking to learn to eat right. Any other sleevers out there in febuary getting ready?

I was just sleeved this past mon 1/20 by Dr O and cannot say enough good things about him, the staff at the hospital was also excellent, had surgery at 10, was home to by noon on Tuesday before the snow, was well enough to show my wife how to start and use the snow blower.

Brothamike.

This is a serious surgery. It is much safer than it used to me.

The majority of people on here have great outcomes. If there is one thing I have learned, it is, there are no guarantees. No 2 people are the same.

There are statistics. the vast majority of info says it is safe. For many of us it is a " life changing" event. It's not all skittles and beer.

There is still a lot of work required on your part.

BUT IT IS WORTH IT.

I am almost 4 months out. Down 66 pounds. Currently at a stall. But I know I'll push through it. I am at 219#. A little bummed.

But being at 219 is a freaking miracle!

If I can lose 66 pounds, I can lose 33 more.

I had complications. All behind me now. It was worth it.

You will have doubts the day of surgery. You will get over it and be GREAT.

It's ok to be nervous. FWIW, I was basically your size before the surgery last year (1/21/13). I went down to Mexico, because of the Dr's experience and relatively low cost.

I couldn't be happier. Down to 195 from 175, Off Metformin. Off Lipitor. Blood pressure back to normal Knees don't ache anymore.

Maximize the first six months, as that's when the bulk of the weight comes off. I was simply not hungry (for the first time n my life). The weight loss for me stopped after that, but I've maintained for over six months now and am much happer and energetic.

Good luck!!

I forgot to mention.... aside from cycling several times / week over the summer, I haven't really begun to excercise on a regular basis. Can't imagine the results when i do!

I have to agree with all the comments here. I too was considered by most to be a "big guy carrying some extra weight" I even heard, "I know you are 20-30 lbs overweight but you carry it well"... If I told them I weighed 324 lbs, was nearly diabetic, had to sleep with a CPAP with max pressure, had feet and joint problems related to weight they would have taken a different look.

Recommendations...keep the details with close family and close friends, steer away from conversation with casual acquaintences and negativity. If they bring it up change the subject...you don't need it.

I too had concerns about going under anethesia and complications. I listened to the Doctor carefully and asked a lot of questions. Ask to meet your anethesiologist for additional support. Your medical team are your specialists they know how to take care of you before and after surgery.

You will do GREAT and FEEL like you are 20 years younger, believe me!

I agree with Dabubba.

Had a conversation with a friend today... She said ". Never thought of you as overweight.". Just a big guy that carried it well.

I am down 73.5#.... Closing in on the 75 # mark.

Hopefully by the weekend. My mantra. If I can lose 75 #. I can lose 25 more!

.

Trying to eat very clean. Drink my water( 65-75 oz / day). And exercise.

PEW I call it.

Protein

Exercise

Water

I have signs up everywhere. PEW, PEW. To remind me.

When I was Pre-op the doc wanted a 24 hour collection of urine for a test. I delivered 11# of Water to the lab. That is how much I was drinking the

I am having surgery on February 21st. I will be starting my preop diet in 2 days. I am excited to change my life but nervous about the whole process. I am currently weighing 285lb and I am 5'9". I have lost 30-50 pounds a dozen times over the last 10 years, just to gain it back. I am turning 40 this year and have two small children and want to be able to keep up ten years from now. I am very active skiing most weekends in the winter and dirtbike riding or hiking in the spring and summer. Carrying this extra weight is taking a toll on my joints. So here I am getting ready to make this big step. All the success stories keep me motivated.

Ready: good for you. I wish I had done it at age 40 vs age 60.

I lost 40 # Pre op.

But I had lost and gained in the past.

I was motivated Pre-op. but I knew I could backslide again

Pre op I COULD HAVE eaten, say a meatball sub. And gotten away with it.

I. Am 4+ months sleeved. I PHYSICALLY CANNOT EAT the likes of a meatball sub.

If I even eat what I am supposed to....... Too quickly, I pay the price. You learn your limitations.

I need this " Hard Rail" to keep me on course.

The best thing is I am master of food.

food is NOT MY MASTER.

That was about it for me, surgery at 10am and home the next day around 6pm. Long as you pass the leak test, if your surgeon does one, and then manage to pee enough you should be home the next day. So having enough liquids is key to getting out.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
