1 week away from surgery, thoughts on pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

So my surgery is on the 20th, one week away.

I was told by my nutritionist that the pre-op diet was something I would look back on as the hardest part. I have been on it for 5 days now, and...well...it is not that bad.

My pre-op diet is a liquid diet - protien shakes and Clear liquids only.

The first day was a nightmare and I was seriously questioning this whole surgery thing.

But as time has gone by, the shakes I chose (premier protein) really fill me up and clear chicken broth in the evening keeps me from cheating.

It is really weird because for me not to cheat and eat something in the evening is tough. I guess the realization that I need this for surgery is keeping me on track.

Has anyone else had that experience? Thinking the pre-op diet was gonna do you in and being surprised?

Just want to get this over with though and get to the other side...

My sleeve surgery was 1 year ago tomorrow and I have to tell you one of the hardest part was the pre op fasting. The 1st week was the hardest, the 2nd week for me was the 7 day countdown, which helped me alot when I was struggling and sleeping helped too. Hang in there, the best is yet to come. I waivered back and forth up to surgery date and even felt a little off balance from the pre op diet because I was hungry and everything I saw looked good, even food I really never cared for. I look at myself today and can't believe I actually did it, all I can say is you have reached the top of the hill and now its downhill from here on out. You will do great, just think a week from today it will be all over and a new you is evolving. Good Luck, hope my words helped a little.

Like the OP my pre-OP was a bit annoying but not terrible. Protein shakes became my friend.

yes, the quality of the shake for taste makes a difference. Luckily my tastes did not change from pre to post surgery - still like the chocolate Premier Protein Shakes.

Wow, do I feel silly. I started the preop diet one week ago and I was convinced that it was going to be the worst thing I will ever have to go through in my life. Now it's one week later and I barely feel hungry. The first three days were hard with detox headaches and head hunger but they went away.

I'm feeling kinda disappointed as I've only lost 5 pounds. I don't know if that's good or whether I should have lost more by now. I am actually consuming less than what my surgeon is allowing me to eat. I'm just not hungry!

I'm due to be sleeved this week and like you I just want the experience to be over with. But at least I'm not worried about the preop stuff anymore! :)

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I am not alone in my thoughts. One thing I can say is that really hot chicken broth in the evening has been really good. It is pretty much the only hot thing I am consuming and really feels good.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
