Hi Brandi,

I had my surgery on Dec. 26 and just had the drain removed last Firday, Jan. 2. You won't even know it's there except when you have to get up to use the bathroom and have to be careful with the pouch. I just let it hang while I showered and didn't feel lit. I kept mine in a pocket, even after I returned home. It doesn't interfere with anything and doesn't hurt at all. When the surgeon removed it, I didn't feel anything, just a slight tug.

Good luck, Betty

I'm another one who's going to be sent home with a drain and I too am nervous. From what I've heard from the people who've had one, it may feel "weird" coming out but it's not supposed to hurt. My surgeon also told me the same thing. Naturally, being the worrywart I am, I'm going to worry about it hurting anyway, and then eventually my surgeon will take it out and I'll see I had nothing to worry about. :)

Exactly what I am trying to do! Convince myself that I am worrying for no reason! I am sure we are and it's going to be no big deal!! When is your surgery?

I'm hoping to have surgery on Jan. 22nd. I haven't gotten insurance authorization yet so things are coming down to the wire. We are going to be just fine, I'm sure of it!!! :)

I had my surgery on Tuesday. I still have the drain in. I can take a picture and show you what it looks like if you want. Basically it's just draining the blood out of your stomach. I get it out Wednesday. You have to be careful when you get up or walk that it doesn't get stuck. You also need to drain it (it is a litle bulb on your side attached to a hose). My doctor wants me to record the amount that I drain each day and the color. It doesn't hurt, it's just a "pain" that it's hanging there haha. I have a safety pin and have it attached to my underwear or pants.

You should only get concerned if the Fluid turns green or yellow....it could be an infection. Mine is draining clear now....I need to confirm if that is a good or bad thing

You will be fine. I had the drain for about 10 days after surgery and also pinned it to my clothing. I will tell you that I started to feel so much better after the drain was removed. I don't know if it was mind over matter or if it was causing some stomach discomfort. It is not painful to remove just the strangest feeling ever and it is literally over in a flash.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
