Not loosing enough weight during pre-op diet.

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if a patient has been denied surgery due to not losing enough weight during pre-op diet? I ask because I gained about 10# during the holiday since turning in my health questionnaire. So far I'm following pre-op to a t but will probably weigh the same as listed in the health q I filled out 2 months ago.

My NUT told me that my paper work would be sent to the insurance with my original weigh-in date on my first visit,

My insurance required a six month managed plan so every time I checked in I was weighed. All they required was to show I could lose weight, not a specific amount. I have heard many posters on this forum say that Surgeons would not perform the surgery unless the patient could show they could stick to a plan and lose weight

I worried the same thing and went back and forth in my mind about that whole idea..what if I lost a lot of weigh like I have done before?would they then deny me the surgery since I was doing so well?seemed like a catch 22.in the end it didn't matter I stayed pretty even and was approved for the surgery most likely because I had 3 co morbidities.

I had my surgery in Mexico. I was asked to lose 35 pounds. I only lost 25 pounds. They still did my surgery. I didn't cheat in the pre op. I lost 25 and then hit a stall for 2 weeks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
