Teachers And The Band

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have read many posts from teachers here and there. I am having my surgery 3 days before spring break, and will only be out 3 days (plus all of spring break to recoop). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has had trouble post banding w/ being a teacher. I don't always have access to the potty, I teach middle school and have a 3 hour block. Are there any other special 'teacher' things that I need to worry about?

Thanks!

I am a teacher with a removed band. I wanted to get rebanded during Spring Break but it does not look like it will be happening so soon. I may wait until the summer. I teach preschoolers with disabilities and developmental delays...my biggest thing was my port. I have to pick up children and transfer them in/out of wheelchairs and other adaptive equiptment. It was a little sore at times but nothing major.

I'm a high school teacher...still preband...but am looking to be banded w/in two months if all goes well! I was hoping to get it done over spring break, but my psych eval couldn't get scheduled until March 30th! :welldoneclap:

My surgery will be on a Thursday, and I'm going to go back to work the following Monday.

I am an assistant principal at a large high school, and I think we educators actually have somewhat of an advantage because we stay so darn busy that it sorta takes your mind off what you can't eat! I had surgery on a Wednesday and tried to go back on a Monday, but I was miserable. I had very little pain from the surgery, but I felt horrible. I had a lot of swelling and couldn't even keep my saliva down. Each person is different. My students are awesome though......... they really have started to notice the weight loss, and they really make you feel good!! GOOD LUCK!

Hi-

I am a substitute teacher (elementary) and teach almost everyday. You're right, not getting "potty breaks" is my hardest part- particularly because I don't know my schedule from day to day. What I found, for the most part, I can plan on drinking one bottle of Water before lunch and then one in the afternoon. Then I have the rest of the evening to get in the remaining amount the my doc wants me to have. I always bring my lunch so that's not been an issue.

Good luck!:welldoneclap:

I teach 6th grade! It has been well over a year since I was banded and I dont recall there ever being a time that my band inconvenienced me on the job. I took off a week and still felt tired when I went back, but was able to handle it.

I'm in the middle of a Bachelor of Primary Education in Australia. I just did 3 weeks of teaching rounds.

actually I lost a bit of weight because of the work environment, you cant eat and drink coffee all day like you do in other jobs.

I had a bottle of Water nearby most of the time but because I wasnt downing six or seven cups of coffee during the day I didnt need the toilet more often than usual.

I'd think being a theatre nurse or similar would be more of a problem!

Hi There! I am a high school teacher--and like you I had my band done before Spring Break (3/8) and I am going back tomorrow 3/19. I will tell you that I am a little nervous about going back to school tomorrow-especially since it is a 6:30am-3:00pm day--I think I will probably miss the naps. I am going to try to take it easy for the first couple of days--probably teach from my desk (which will be hard for me--I am very animated--I teach Biology) I probably won't have a problem for RR breaks--because you will find out you go a lot less after surgery. I'll let you know this week how it goes :welldoneclap:

Take Care!

Denise

Hey Ladies,

I teach PK and was banded last summer. I had time to recuperate during summer months, but I had no problems in the classroom. I have to agree that being so busy does take your mind off being hungry. I have the convenience of having a potty in my room, so that does help. Other than that, no biggy. Best of luck.

I DO have something to mention in the problem department. The all-liquid diet can cause urgent diarrhea which is majorly inconvenient in the classroom...not to mention some pretty unpleasant noises in a bathroom shared with students. :painkiller: (sorry, had to use that smilie!)

I had forgotten this little problem until I had a rough adjustment period with my recent fill that kept me on all liquids for 2 weeks.

Hi I've been banded around 17 months and began teaching this year. As you can see from my stats I'm a slow loser...WELL...I've lost 5 kilos in 8 weeks! I think this is for a number of reasons. 1. teaching is quite physical 2. I am soooo careful with what I eat as I just CAN NOT risk something getting stuck and 3. as mentioned earlier no where near the tea/coffee and associated yummies as before. When I get home I'm just too tired to sit in front of the telly and eat cheesecake lol.

don't grab a quick bite of something "unknown" just before class.

I am a college teacher and on some days, I don't get a proper lunch break. One day I stuffed an uncertain food down between classes as I was starving. Whatever it was didn't want to go down and I had a major slime. I was also worried that I would be late to my class or might not be able to make it at all.

In the end, my slime resolved itself just before my class and all was well.

Lesson to me was to always carry a safe snack and to never eat anything before class that I wasn't sure would go down easily.

Hope that helps!

Kando

Hey Kity....my banding date is 3/28. Looks like we're both doing the 3 days before break and then off during the break for recoop. I planned things that way so I would do most of the liquid stage at home instead of at school. I know that by the time I go back to school I'll be moving onto mushies. So...here's to us, may banding be successful!

Thanks for all of your posts. My principal also had WLS so he is understanding, but the students...they are another story. I am still nervous about going back to work, I also teach at the local junior college Mon and Tues nights, so those are 12 hour days. But I will take it slow and easy. Thanks to everyone...keep in touch!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
