Experience with gastro illnesses after banding?

Recommended Posts

My family is here for the holidays and it appears that some sort of stomach bug is going around. I have luckily never vomited with the lap band, and I know it's a bad thing. How do you deal with a tummy bug? Anything I should know?

I haven't vomited since being banded either, but I have heard, that if you begin vomiting, do not wait, call your surgeon or get to the ER as there can be dire consequences for the band with vomiting. Maybe you could ask your surgeon for a prescription to have on hand in case of nausea/illness. Best wishes :)

I have vomited, and ended up with a slip!(true stomach vomiting, not pb'ing) If you truly have a stomach virus, my surgeon suggests an unfill! Best wishes, stay healthy, take some zolfran to ward off vomiting. I think you have to see your doctor for it! Best wishes! Hope that your Christmas and New year are happy and healthy! My doctor told me to call at the first sign for meds to stop vomiting!

Thanks for answering, everyone.

So far so good...all the kids and my sister got the dreaded barfs/diarrhea, and my daughter got it just last night/this morning. But she feels much better this afternoon. I have been washing my hands so much that they are chapped!! The incubation period of this dreaded yuck is about 2 days. I've made it 3 so far--let's hope I avoid it entirely.

PS I called my doc's office, but the nurse must be on holiday because she didn't call me back yet. I know to call ASAP and be persistent if I get the barfs.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
