Hi my name is jim and i had my sleeve done one dec 12th. So far things have been good and i have lost a considerable amount of weight for being 10 days out. My wife had the DS in march so we r on this road together. I just have a few questions at this point. 1 is i was never clear on how many calories i should get in a day im probably doing 500-600. So is that enough? My dr was very adamant on watching out for liquid calories. Also i know a lot of people jump phases even though we r all advised not to. Now im not trying to yet im not even in a full 2 weeks but i know soon ill be on puree foods and from my wife doing it i can tell its not fun. food is not meant to taste good all ground up and mixed together. She skipped her puree phase and started eating and it worked out for her with no complications. If i feel im having trouble eating puree foods what do people suggest? I dont want to push it and i know not eating solids is going to help the weight loss but lets face it a lot of people who get these types of operations have emotion attachments to food and im one of them so there is that aspect as well. Any advice is greatly appreciated thanks.

I'm not sure if you're asking if it's ok to skip the puree phase. A lot of people on here will read you the riot act about following your surgeon's instructions. Yes this is important. Everyone's plan is a little different. There are some people that are started on purees almost immediately. Some people are on clears for a week and advance slower. What do you mean about emotional attachments to foods, and how does that relate to your post op plan? Not sure what you're looking for here, but be safe and careful!

It's best to start working on those emotional attachments right now, in these early stages because as the days weeks and months pass it will get easier and easier to eat more and "eat around" your sleeve.

As for the purée stage I would not suggest skipping it when the time comes for you to be on it..

I know you said your wife did ok and some do. But some don't and it's just best to follow your doctors orders.

Really the purée looked a bit funny but when I finally got there? It was a welcome change and was warm savory and satisfying.

And there was no worrying about doing something that might be harmful to my healing stomach

Hi Jim! Congrats on your new journey!

I wouldn't recommend skipping a phase based on someone else's experience. Base it off of your dr's recommendation. Does purée food taste awesome and is it the best out there? No, it's not. But you can make chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad, etc. there are a buffet (no pun intended) of recipes out there for WLS patients. Google and there are a few on these forums, as well.

I couldn't get in enough cals/protein on the purée stage so I continued to drink Protein shakes and bites of puréed foods. Then slowly added more food and less Liquid Protein.

I added unflavored Protein to Soups. Was a lifesaver for me.

Hope this helps.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
