Dealing with cravings

Recommended Posts

I am pre-op and working so hard on all the changes to the new me!

Every once in a while I have some really bad cravings...

Before I was a candy eater..gummy bears and skittles were my weakness...

So for 3 days craving skittles...all I can think about...any ideas to make this go away or food substitutes to put in their place?

I guess for pre-op you might try sugar free candies. I was a candy eater also, but at 4 weeks post op, I don't have those cravings. Donut did cross my mind for one brief second. fruit is sweet like candy.

I can't tell you how exciting it is to at least know those craving might not be there after the surgery. I understand everyone is different and how each one's body reacts is different but still to know that it could not be there helps.

Do you guys use gum to try to help with cravings? I have never been a gum chewer but it is becoming high in my thought list to use between meals.

My Dr said absolutely no gum. If it got swallowed by mistake, it could block your opening. It is serious stuff. He also said no straws. Just hang in there, it gets better. You will be thinking about how to get your Protein and Water in, you won't have time to crave sweets.

Thanks for the info about gum I haven't heard that yet!

I received the warnings about Gummy bears so broke that habit. Learned why no gummy vitamins. So will not eat gummy bears for same reasons. Sticky, sweating, paste stuck in pouch sounds awful!

I've been eating some gummy vitamins. What is the problem with them?

My Nut said to think of a Gummy bear in a very hot humid car how they get sticky and sweat and sort of melt. they do that in the pouch and are like a glue. In your pouch they do this and can make everything sticky and clog because takes forever to dissolve. So no gummy vitamins plus the sugar can cause dumping.

What kind of Vitamins do you take? Guess I need to get rid of my gummy vitamins or spread them out until they are gone. I have another one that is chewable, but really tired of it.

I had heard whatever substance they are using to make the Vitamins Gummy takes away from the effectiveness of how they are absorbed.

Thanks everyone for the info on gummy vitamins. It seems no matter how much we think we know, we can always learn more. Unfortunately, I am going to finish what I bought because I don't have a lot of money to replace them right now. I do have some chewable, so will try to mix it up a bit. Had been having some stomach pain. Wonder if it could be related to the Vitamins? Just a thought.

Always remember that every doctor is different. My doc recommended the Gummy vitamins after surgery. So check with your doctor or Nut about the vitamins.

I am pre-op so I had bought gummies at first so I am finishing them up as they run out I am adding chewable Multivitamins and chewable C that I take with Iron pill. I have chewable Calcium. I also take a B12 pill and a Vitamin D pill.

All my levels were good except Iron was low so making sure I eat foods with iron too.

Don't take the Calcium at the same time as your Iron and C. It counteracts the iron. I usually take it a couple of hours later.

I normally take the C and Iron at bed and Calcium during the day all other Vitamins in the morning. This was all new to me before Sept. I had never took vitamins except during my pregnancies and those were short lived because how sick I was.

Evening everyone! I am a week post op. I have felt good enough to try eating some soft solid foods, ie; noodles, thinned mashed potatoes, hummus, things of that nature. My husband is very uneasy of this and I think if my body wasn't ready for it, there would have been serious repercussions after eating. Is this going to harm me or interfere with healing? I promised him I would ask the Dr when I get my staples removed. Was curious on y'alls thoughts. Thanks!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
