I was banded at about 7 this morning. I feel great. Was able to hold down my liquids, walked the halls, and went to the bathroom by myself. The only thing that is bothering me is this awful gas pain! It hurts in my stomach, shoulder, and side...can someone tell me what I can do to release/relieve the gas besides walking? The nurse told me to take gas x tomorrow after I'm released.

Thanks,

It's been 5 days since I was banded and the gas is still there and hurts very bad. I have been taking gas x strips it does help but not completely.

Try gentle stretches, roll your torso to one side and the other (gently, slowly, carefully, stopping if it hurts, of course) bending slowly foreword and back a bit... These moves may help to dislodge and move the gas on out.

I had surgery in March, and had some mad gas discomfort and these moves helped me move it out.

I was lucky when I had my band placed last month... My surgeon did a good job de-gassing me. I had almost no discomfort from gas. :)

Best wishes, how are you now? It takes awhile for the gas to leave. As your nurse said, try Gas-x. Walking and heating pads helped the most for me! Mine got so bad that I even took some Tylenol to help the pain! Karen..aka..kll724

Hi there, some had mentioned the Happy Baby pose on a thread when I was recovering from being banded -- it's a yoga pose and basically what Icy One is suggesting above. That and the walking as much as possible and heating pad....hope you're home soon. Welcome to banded life! It's going to be great!

I was banded on Wednesday. The gas pain has been so bad, I was reduced to tears the last two nights. I could barely take a breath without feeling like someone was stabbing me in my left shoulder. To top it off, my appetite has sucked. I'm on full liquids and I'm starving but nothing sounds good. I had a big boohoo with the hubby and I'm feeling better.

But, I must say, I was using the gasex strips and switched to the chewables and they seem to work better for me. Also, I hadn't had a bowel movement in four days and when I finally got that going it helped.

I read online that the gas is actually trapped up by your diaphragm and because of the way your nerve endings are connected around there, it presents as shoulder pain. It's good to know cause I kept wishing my shoulder could fart. Lol!

Lol @ wish your shoulder could fart! Did you have to use anything to have a bowel movement? I'm not having shoulder pain, mine is mostly floating around in my stomach as if it's looking for an escape route because it keeps moving. I'm being released from the hospital this morning and stopping at the drugstore to pick up chewable gas x, I have a heat pad at home. I slept good last night with little pain.

Thanks for your suggestions,

We had some chewable exlax around the house and I used that. Prob not on the clear liquid list but they're so small and I was desperate. Good luck. Hope your recovery is speedy!

My dr has recommended milk of magnesia to get things moving. Just remember even though you're stopped up, liquids in basically means liquids out. :(

I was just banded this past Monday.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
