Not sure if i made the best decision

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 12/18/13. Not sure if I made the best decision. I am in a lot of pain. Can barely drink Water. I can't talk to my family because I don't want them saying I told you not to do it. I had a few sips of chicken broth today. Jello sf is too sweet. I need help

Look forward, not back. Looking back with regret does nothing useful.

You cannot get your stomach back.

This too shall pass.

Almost all feel (per the forum members posts) much better in a month. You will too.

The first week apparently can really suck. You can get through this.

Keep your chin up! You can do this!

The first couple of weeks are the hardest, physically. The pain gets better quickly, and in the meanwhile you have pain medication, right? You just concentrate on getting Water in. Yes, Protein is important, but right now Water is your priority.

Do you have at least one person who can be with you, who did NOT tell you not to do it? Ask that person to visit you for at least a couple of hours a day, and let him/her help you with the things that need to be done - feed the pets, stand by while you shower so you won't be alone when you might get dizzy... And set up a pattern of checking in with him/her by phone 2-3 times a day so that someone keeps tabs on you while you're vulnerable. You can do this!

I was sleeved on 12/17, just a day before you. For the first two days I was in really bad shape. It gets better. It'll get better more and more every day. I already feel 10x better today than yesterday. Hang in there and keep going to the reasons you did this in the first place.

I think when a lot if us go into this we forget or just don't realize this is a MAJOR surgery, I know I did.

Don't let the little scars fool you...

Now it's going to take time to recover.

You are less than a week out. The only thing you should be doing is concentrating on healing, that means resting, hydrating, walking around a bit and resting some more..

Things will get better it will not always be this bad, your body just needs time to heal from the major trauma it just went through.

Really I was not 100% for a month!

Be kind to yourself and know in just a very short time this hard part will just be a memory :)

This can be a lonely time around some family, as they do not truly understand what we go through, but fear not, this forum has a huge number of people you can lean on when you are feeling unsure. I was sleeved on December 2nd and I am just starting to feel like my old self. I also had moments of doubt, times of frustration, a bad attitude, and sadness over things I gave up for this. Now that I'm a little farther out and the wounds, literally and figuratively are healing, I have a different outlook. You will get there too. Just be kind to yourself and allow yourself to take things slowly and take the time you need to heal. Your family may surprise you as well, don't be afraid to open up to your support group. Your mind and body are going through a huge change, these things take time, even though most of us wish we could just be back to our normal selves right away. In a few weeks you will be in a different mindset. Good luck to you, and don't be afraid to reach out if you need support!

Hang in there - I had serious buyer's remorse the first couple of days, too and wondered if I made the right decision. Once I started feeling better, my mind started to follow.

Focus on getting in your Water - sip, sip, sip. Know that you're probably not going to get in your minimums for a while, just do the best you can. Walking helped make me feel better and helped get rid of the gas in my abdomen.

Best of luck to you - it will get better.

It will get better! I couldn't drink or eat for days. Sipping Water was really difficult. Couldn't even eat Soup without throwing up. Even a month out it was taking me about 3 hours to drink a Protein shake. I was devastated that I had done this to myself, and I thought i would never feel normal again. 2 months out, I can drink easily - even gulp back a glass of Water with ease. I can eat more (unfortunately!!), but I still can't eat "chunky" food and need to puree most meals. But I'm not panicked now. I'm delighted that i made the decision. I feel more "normal" every day.

When you're still only days out, and struggling, every day can seem like a lifetime. But the days will go past quickly, and you will soon start to feel much better :-) And thinner!!!!

Boy does this sound familiar! This feeling will eventually pass. I started feeling better when I went on soft foods. 8 weeks out now and I am so glad I will never have to re-live that first month again- it was the hardest for me. If you like chocolate milk, you may want to try Ensure High Protein shakes- milk chocolate flavor. They come pre-mixed in a 4 pack with each bottle offering 25g Protein, only 5g sugar, 2.5g fat and 50% of RDA of Vitamins. They go down very smoothly with no after taste. They also have vanilla, strawberry and dark chocolate flavors but I haven't tried any of them yet. I wish I would have known about them when I was in the liquid stage. Give yourself time like laura-ven said and don't compare yourself to others. Everyone is different. Even though I feel good most days, I still get really tired doing some routine things like going grocery shopping. I just figure my complete recovery will take as long as it takes, so I take it one day at a time. Relax and heal- good luck! :)

You are not alone. I was sleeved 12/16, on 12/17 I was taken back into surgery to fix a hiatal hernia and to remove scar tissue from around my esophagas. Apparently I've had an acid problem for a few years and didn't even know. I am feeling the same as you and honestly - I'm a little frightened by it all. I am not keeping down fluids at all. I take in two tiny sips within a 20 minute time frame and back up it comes. I am SO thirsty. If I could get a grip on the nausea and keep some Fluid down I wouldn't be so worried. My surgeon said my sleeve looks totally normal and I am recovering nicely but I don't feel like it.

Youre only a few days out. Recovery from any surgery is rough. I recovered pretty well but im 4 weeks out now and feel 1,000 times brtter than that first week. Theres a lot of emotions too. Give youreself time....I say even up to a year. This is a major surgery to recover from. Most of us have 20 + years of bad eating habits which is why I say a year to recovert because I dont only mean physically. I mean emotionally too. You will feel great before u know it!

My surgeon was so casual and relaxed even though I thought I was dying! I thought he just didn't understand what I was feeling. Now I realise he had seen it all before, and he knew I would start to feel better in no time, and he was right.

One thing that did help me was drinking milk. For some reason, milk went down more easily than anything else, and it stayed down.

I was sleeved in April. You really will feel a little better each and every day and before you know it, all is "normal" again. Have faith in your own resilience and that thousands have trod this same road before you.

Good luck.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
