How do you take your crushed meds without gagging

Recommended Posts

I've tried puttting the crushed meds in just about everything on my post-op diet but they make everything taste so disgusting I can't eat it. These are pills that don't come in a chewable or liquid form. Any ideas?

Omg. This is horrible. I only have 2 pills to crush and I have been mixing my pills with a little Powerade zero. Awful awful awful. It takes hours to get that funky taste out of my mouth!

I hear ya. I have extensively searched for an alternate for the meds I take now, to no avail. My Doc said I can crush them, but I figured there was a reason they aren't available as powder or liquid and your experience confirms that.

Please don't give up trying or posting on this subject. If you find a way please post it. I have some real horse pills and I'm not looking forward to their horrible taste crushed.

I just had my surgery on Monday. Am I only crushing these bc I'm so close out of surgery? What about 1 month out? Will I always have to crush pills?

What I did was add some (well... really alot) crystal light to it to make bearable. A few of the pills weren't so bad but one of my r/x meds turned the Water to a jelly like consistency, it was soooo gross. This crystal light helped. The good thing is the crystal light is sugar free and carbs free so no worries there. This was was my made up remedy, I hope it works for you.

To answer amanda4166's question, my doctor told me to stop crushing the meds a week after my surgery. Please check with yours first before stopping.

My doctor said I didn't have to crush anything. From day 2 post op I have been swallowing all my pills whole. P.S. check with the dispensing pharmacy or your prescriber. Pretty much every medication has a liquid form.

i have perfected this method.

take applesauce (my dr had us taking pills in applesauce from day one) and put a dab on a big spoon ( like a tablespoon, not a teaspoon). use a smaller spoon to rub it around so it coats the whole spoon. crush your pill, pour into the center and gently move the spoon so some of the powder goes into different places (all of it bunched up will make you gag!). then take another dab of applesauce and pour it over the top of the crushed pill, gently moving that to cover the powder. take your pill! you still get a hint of the pill, but it's not nearly as bad as literally mixing it into applesauce. i hope this helps!

Hospital gave me tablets to take whole on day two. I've been taking them ever since with no problems.

1 month out and I swallow all pills whole. Changed my big Multivitamin to a liquid from a compound pharmacy. I could not stand chewing two chalky discs called Bariatric Advantage Multivitamin.

I squish my pills between 2 spoons. Next I take a tiny bit of my Protein Shake and pour it into the spoons with the crushed pills. I swallow it back and chase it with a swig of the shake. I tried adding it to stuff before too, I think it just gives you more bitter stuff to get down.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
