wheat, carbs my dr said NO, NO!

To the OP: you trusted your doctor to get you this far and got great results, so continue to trust him and stop looking here for permission to eat differently. None of us are doctors. Stick with his plan and continue to lose well. He has a lot of patients and obviously has seen good results. Trust him!

Its not that I don't trust him, in the beginning when I started the process and the manual I received did not say that. When I returned for my follow up visit he read a book called grain brain and then he got on the bandwagon about this. I just wanted to see what others had to not looking for permission.

There are a BUNCH of paths that might work. Just build one and keep checking to see how you do. I need to avoid sugars and starches and processed carbs... I found out the hard way...

yeah, you need to figure out what makes sense to you! and what works best for your body and your sleeve. i feel like crap when i am in full blown ketosis (no carbs). some people swear by a Keto diet, saying they feel great on it, lots of energy and very clear brain function. i am a bitch and feel sluggish and foggy. my brain needs more glucose. but thats what works FOR me. when anyone, doctor included shoves a particular eating plan at you, ( my doc recommends paleo, btw) say, "wow, that is so great you found something that makes you feel so much better. i would love to learn more about it. thanks for the info." (then smile and change the subject. lol) then, check it out. a lot of people have found they really do feel better without wheat. my husbands stepsister was talking yesterday about going wheat free yesterday. she's had stomach issues her whole adult life and just had a horrible 4 month bout of intestinal dysfunction due to overuse of antibiotics. i told her, it cant hurt to try. same for you. but, and that's a big but, you have to feel like the plan you are following makes sense for you personally.

Hey I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op down 24lbs. Went to see doc healing well expected to lose 20 more lbs my next Friday week visit. Ok so doc says I can no longer have ANY wheat anything nothing :( not to mention carbs with wheat out the door to like brown rice, wheat pasta...HUUUMP his words "if it doesn't grow that way its no good". Also he made mention no process food as in things you have to put together meat balls, turkey burgers etc what the Sam hill come on doc! He read a book called Brain Grain something like that and the author says grain is not good for you etc etc. Have anyone heard of this or have anyones doc told them they can't have any of the things mentioned above?

It sounds like he is saying you are gluten intolerant. I have been GI for several years. Research it.

no, shes saying her doc read the book, "grain brain" which says basically,that wheat is bad for everyone, and why in very scientific terms. and now he wants his patients to go wheat free. "grain brain" is about how we are all GMO wheat intolerant.

Moon, out of curiosity, when was your surgery and how much have you lost? And no, I do not have wheat issues, I just feel that none of us are qualified to go off on our own for diets when our bad judgement got us here to start with. I don't believe in using our "good judgement" because I doubt many of us have any regarding food. Just IMHO.

how is not eating grains in conflict with any post opt diet? on my paperwork it says Protein, veggies, fruit, carbs. in that order, stop eating when you are full. i am pretty full from my Protein. have room for veggies sometimes. fruit almost never. carbs, never. so to fit grains into my diet, would need to skimp someplace else.

i am the best expert on my health and body. my doctor is my ally, not my boss. i am in charge of my body and my medical care. i research everything, get input and make my decisions. i chose what is best for me. and yes, my doctor recommends paleo diets. i grew up eating gluten free, i taught cooking classes at two health food stores and worked as both meal planner and private chef for people on special diets. i was not fat cause i ate at mcdonalds and cheesecake factory.

if you do not agree with my POV, that is fine. i personally do not blindly follow what any doctor tells me. but you should what you feel most comfortable with.

I totally agree. I have been eating what was instructed to do; but alot of those things don't agree with my sleeve at all so I pretty much been stuck drinking and when I have anything to drink it has to have lots of crushed ice in it. I tolerate crab meat and fish well. I just want to be successful, but I know I have to do what's best for me. I to didn't get over weight by eating.

not sure what you meant to say, but i sure got fat by overeating! even healthy food will make you fat if you eat enough of it!

LOL I'm sure it was a typo. I know I didn't fat by accident! :)

I know I'm MUCH better off by trying to eliminate all carbs. It's impossible, of course...but by dramatically restricting them, I find I feel soooooo much better. And I am no good for the "just one cookie" thing, either...it turns into "just one MORE cookie" and never ends.

People don't always get over weight by eating! You may have...I'm really not understanding this group thought it was support; but I see some on here try and tear others down. "Typo"you think. I know my situation. Its ok if you don't agree really it is. I could go on but I will stop here for this is not the place for it.

I think you may be being overly sensitive. I wasn't tearing anyone down. But what you said seemed a little counter intuitive. If you didn't become overweight by over eating, how did it happen? And why have a surgery that makes over eating difficult if over eating was not the problem?

I'm not being non supportive I'm simply puzzled and asking a question.

I will say this. I think if you had asked me in September why I was overweight I would have told you that I didn't eat like crazy. And I never did, really…but I think my metabolism was destroyed and I had NO idea how many calories I really took in. I mean, yes, a general idea and I am very good at giving you calorie counts for every food on the planet. But I had my head in the sand when I didn't want to be thinking about it. I exercised some but not nearly enough to offset what I took in.

That's why the restriction is working for me. Unless I'm mistaken, my physiology has not done a 180 in the last two months. I will say that other than being hypothyroid/Hashimoto's, I don't suffer from the other underlying conditions that can be cleared up with the surgery. (I get the thyroid retested next month; we'll see if that function has improved or if I can go down on the medication.) So if you have some of these other conditions, my condolences. It is really tough.

Now that I'm eating 1,000 calories a day or less I am losing weight. And that, to me, indicates that I was taking in enough calories to maintain a much higher weight. No judgment, no magic formula (I will be interested to see what the "tipping" point is there…is it 1,200, or 1,500, or 2,000?) but the main thing the surgery has done is make it possible for me to eat a low number of calories, stop when I am full, and thrive while doing it.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
