Recommended Posts

I went to see surgeon today, I was diagnosed with hiatel hernia. Anyone had to have hernia repaired during surgery? My doctor said it's small & he will repair it during surgery. If anyone had hernia repaired during surgery, how was recovery? Did it take longer to return to normal activity? Please let me know..hope to have wls early spring 2014..going on my 4th diet visit in Jan. .tnx

Yeppers. I had a HH diagnosed DURING surgery. MAYBE added 10 minutes to the procedure (per the surgeon) and added NO pain or recovery time. He was in there anyway!!!

I had the same issue, discovered during sugery. I think this is fairly common.

No issues at all. Surgeon said all they do is throw in a few extra stitches to keep the stomach from bulging up through the diaphram

Mine was detected during the pre op endoscopy. Never had any symptoms and did not know I had one! Repaired during surgery, no issues.

Yep me too. My doctor knew I had one. The did the camera down my stomach prior to the surgery. It was large and they repaired during surgery. I was fine recovering also.

Mine was discovered during surgery as I had no scope prior to surgery. Like Arts said, added minimal time to surgery. Non issue. I also haven't had any issues with reflux. That was a big issue for me pre-surgery.

I was diagnosed with sliding HH as well. My doc said with the sleeve they're not correcting them if they're small. Something about the new smaller stomach wont be forcing up through the hole and everything fixes itself. That's my translation. I may not have understood it all. But he didnt add stitches.

My surgeon said the same thing. If mine is small enough, they won't bother with it because it won't be necessary. Surgery is 12/23/2013.

This issue is very common with overweight people. I have one as well. I'm waiting for surgery and I was told that it would be corrected when I have my procedure. I don't think it is anything major. :)

I had one and it was repaired during surgery.

I felt it afterwards, but I'm a singer and sang somewhere about 10 days after surgery. Uh, definitely had some tightness and trouble with support at that point...

But I'm 8 weeks out and have no problems now.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. Looking forward to spring 2014, when I will be done with pre-op and hopefully surgery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
