Are You Happy That You Had The Sleeve Procedure?

Recommended Posts

I try but all I do is get nauseous and end up vomiting I am on a 3rd medication for nausea and seems not to help either. I'm tired of trying to keep from being nauseous. I want to believe it will get better. But when I can't sit up long enough to drink Water before feeling this way makes me just want to sleep all day so I don't throw up.

Gelica, I'm almost 2 weeks post-op and I'm going through a similar situation. I'm constantly nauseated. Constantly. I'm unable to get fluids in because of the nausea, and I'm seriously dehydrated. I am not getting Protein in either because I'm unable to tolerate my shakes. I actually dread the thought of putting anything into my stomach because I know the nausea will begin again. The only time my tummy is settled is when it's empty. I wonder sometimes if this is a normal rite of passage, or if this is going to be the "normal" for me. I surely hope not!

"Similarly I have to note when I took my Calcium supplement so I'll know when I can take my Iron - and vice versa. "

JeanZ... I've had the same problem trying to figure out when to take my Iron so it wasn't with my multi or with my calcium or with a meal. Well, rarely does a night go by that I don't have to get up and pee, so I keep my Celebrate chewable iron +Vitamin C next to my bed and nibble it down in the middle of the night when I'm up anyways. ;)

Seven months out next week and I was one who had a few complications (minor) post op. Slight stricture, difficulty passing the food stages, major Water poop anywhere/anytime, lots of time spent sliming or vomiting (still happens once or twice a week).

That said...

Yes. I do enjoy my sleeve. Now. At first I didn't.

I don't know how to say this without pi**ing some people off, but please understand that is not my intention. I know where you are coming from. But... I think it's somewhat unfair to say you 'regret' getting sleeved when you are so early out. A lot of us had really sucky beginnings and even major struggles. My heart goes out to you, sincerely. I completely understand the feeling of regret early on. But I think you'll find with time that most of us end up loving our sleeve despite early complications. The reason there are so few negative stories on here is just that... thrre ARE few. The people who have lasting complications break my heart. And while I'm sorry you are struggling I would venture to guess 6 months from now you'll be whistling a different tune. That is my sincere wish anyway <3 good luck and I hope your regrets vanish with the loss of your weight and the return of your health

I am scheduled for my sleeve surgery one week from today! Tell me, would you do it again? What do you wish you'd know when you were pre op?

Thanks for replying! Joan

Joan,

I really researched this, read whatever books I could on the subject, talked to folks who had VSG, in hopes I was well informed before my surgery. There are days where its frustrating that my eyes are bigger than my sleeve, and there are times that I'd like to have a bigger meal once in awhile.............but I remind myself those big meals helped get me to 244 pounds......the head hunger/food issues I had preop, I still have, and working on them......those don't go away.

That being said, I am so very happy I had the sleeve......every single aspect of my life has been improved, I'm no longer in chronic pain, and I finally have hope that I can get to a healthy weight again...........I hope this helps...........good luck next week!

Would I? Heck yes! I'm now almost 3 weeks post-op and I've dropped 27 pounds. I've had very few negative side effects. Yeah, I still WANT to eat a big, fat meal, but then my sleeve reminds me that it's all in my head. I hope all of you with problems are able to get them behind you as soon as possible!

Last night I made Shepherd's Pie for the family - it was sleeve friendly, so I could eat it except for the peas and corn.

I loaded up my bowl with about a cup of food like I would have pre-surgery (old habits - this is the first meal didn't measure or weigh and the first time eating the same thing the family ate). I realized what I did and I looked at my husband with a horrified look on my face. I said, "I'll probably only eat about 1/4 of this, why did I put so much in my bowl?" He didn't have the answer, but he watched me eat...about a 1/4 of a cup of food and stop. My sleeve wouldn't let me eat what my brain put in the bowl.

It is an amazing tool!!!!!!

So last week I was admitted to the hospital for my nausea and constant vomiting. My blood pressure was so low from dehydration and even the medications in the hospital weren't keeping me from vomiting. I am back home now after having a PICC line inserted at the hospital and receiving TPN at night. I hope it's not for long that I am on this. I do still regret this, my husband has to help me shower, set up my TPN every night and remove it. I should have tried harder on losing weight on my own. I am still on my 20s and should not be requiring home care.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one......except I did something like this at someone's home who didn't know I had surgery, I was horrified.......it's not like I could scoop some of the food up and put it back in the bowl...LOL....I just moved it around on my plate.....

Gelica,

Sorry you're having such a tough time of it....Thank you for sharing your experience---it's important for people considering this to see that there can be complications.......wishing you the best.....hope things get better for you real soon. --patty

I do this all the time. When my eyes are about 5 times bigger than what my actual stomach can hold.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
