My dr told me to not worry about counting calories~~I am to make wise choices in food and eat healthy. Thank goodness I hate counting anything.

I agree with this if someone is losing weight. But when someone is not losing weight and they are exercising, they are often times shocked at how many calories they are consuming when they do start counting.

I think it is wise not to hyperfocus on calories. But if things aren't working, a food journal for a few weeks is very beneficial.

No kidding!!! I was amazed before I had the surgery how many calories I was consuming in one day. I had no idea until I started writing everything down. I'm surprised I don't weigh more than I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hungry:

I never had the guts to sit down and count calories before banding. I was afraid I'd embarrass myself TO myself!

But I count every single calorie today and it is paying off. I stick to 500-600 daily and for 'me' that works.

When I was first evaluated at my GS office I was amazed at the caloric intake they said I was consuming to maintain my current weight (3000+ calories). They put me on a pre op diet, (Optifast) and reduced me to between 600 - 800 calories a day. I ate followed it closley, and have done well in the last 3.5 weeks - 27 lbs.

Congrats! That's fantastic! Keep up the great work, I swear... it's all worth it.

Julie,

I have a question for you. How much do you eat now? I've read that you will only be able to eat 2-3 tablespoons of food each meal - 3x a day. I was banded on 5/16/07 and can eat way more than that! I have not had my first adjustment yet so there is no saline in my band yet. Will the amount I am able to eat change after the adjustment? I hope so because if not I feel like this is useless.

Thanks!

Tina

Well of course it will.

Question for you, what did you think the adjustment is for?

I do understand that I may have to concentrate on calorie counting maybe eventually. For right now thank goodness, I am still losing weight. I do chose my foods wisely. I rarely have sweets and hardly in breads. I do believe I need a fill right now because I can eat more than usual. Knowing that though I am still restricting the amounts. I believe calorie counting is good, I just right now am not focusing on it. My DR my eventually advise it. His wife is the nutritionist and she does speak of calorie counting YET!!

I glad toknow someone is doing 500-600 calories a day. Most think thast I am crazy for only doing that amount. But it really does work for me I also on saturdays allow an extra 200 calories whichso far I have'nt used but anyway it's go to see someone else doing the same.:)

It's funny isn't, what we really discover about ourselves after banding? Well, pre-band, I was constantly on a diet (you know what I mean!) and thought a good day was 12-1400 calories.... I cannot lose unless I consume less than 1000 a day. at 1200-1400 and a strict exercise program, I maintain my current weight of 158. I was 212 at banding so I've lost 54 pounds. I've maintained this weight for almost a year now - and have had a bit of an unfill to be comfortable- which I am. I can eat most anything now, including drinking carbonated beverages (beer) but still much much smaller quanitities and have some good days and some bad as always

I am sticking to around 700 per day. It make it easier for me to plan my day if I have an idea of what I'm doing as far as food goes. I've settled into 20 carbs, 30 fat grams and 90 Protein as a goal. Works out to be just over 700 calories. I saw this breakdown on another web site and it works good for me. My doc says up to 30 carbs so i do have a significant cushion.

PS

I haven't had a fill yet (scheduled Tuesday !!). My plan is to lower my intake o 500 - 600 at that time.

I was told by the nutritionist at my two week follow-up that I should be between 680 and 800 cals per day.

Sometimes I feel more hungry than other times, so on those days I keep my calories at 800. She suggested that you don't go below the 680. Also that you need to keep your Protein grams at 45 per day.

Hope this helps.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
