Congrats on going through the process. I'm about ten weeks post surgery and it's the best decision I may have ever made. So far I'm down almost fifty since the sleeve and over 75 including what I lost ahead of time. Good luck from one Oregonian to another.

Hi Everyone....I'm here in Portland and Emma Patterson just did my gastric Bypass on Monday 3/30/15 and I feel great! Emma placed a lapband in 2007 and after years of complications took it out Oct. 2014.

I have to say that I wasn't expecting to still have the appetite I seems to and that's a bummer. But I am getting in all my liquids and Protein via Soups with Protein powder and shakes.

Anyway, just thought I'd pop in and introduce myself!

Welcome Marie.

I wish there were more Portlanders on here, but I guess it doesn't matter much. I had a sleeve about ten weeks ago and am doing great. I'm visiting Tucson AZ right now and biking daily.

Anyway, glad you stopped by.

Congrats Marie, keep us in the loop how you are doing.

Eli, what has been the hardest thing post op that you have had to deal with? My biggest concern is dumping and will it keep me from doing the things that prompted me to have surgery in the first place or will I always be worried if I am near a bathroom :(

Dumping hasn't been an issue for me at all. I've had a near perfect time. I'm down between 75-80 pounds now including my pre op diet. I just got home from a leisurely 18 mile hilly bike ride while on vacation in Arizona.

Hardest part for me is having to separate my eating and drinking. I just got back from the ride, am very thirsty and hungry, but I had to decide to drink first, wait a half hour and then I'll eat. But honestly, that's the worst of it. Also going out to eat and ordering an appetizer for my meal, still not finishing that and have the waitress concerned that I hated my meal. Small stuff like that, but it's all just tiny things you get used to.

On the other hand, I just flew here on a plane and didn't need a seat belt. extender and didn't have my fat rolls overhang to my neighbors seat. I get compliments daily from everyone who knew me before and I still have a good way to go.

This has been the best decision I've made in decades. Of course, I've had no issues and if you are Portland local, I would highly recommend Dr. Matar at OHSU.

By the way, dumping is very rare with the sleeve surgery unlike gastric bypass. I was sleeved and depending on how obese you are, a sleeve is more likely what most people get today.

If you have any more questions, please ask, I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks for the reply Eli. So awesome to hear how well you are doing. I, unfortunately, only have Gastric Bypass as an option through my insurance so we will see. I have heard good things about Dr. Patterson and she is the only one my insurance will cover also but I have complete confidence in her. I am hoping that as long as I am diligent about avoiding the things that cause me issues I will not have a problem with dumping.

Fingers crossed :) Sounds like you are having an awesome time in Arizona. Can't wait to once be highly active. Congrats,

Hi everyone. Janae here. Im a kaiser patient and am just waiting to hear from the appointment setter for my appt with the surgeon. I dont know which surgeon I will have. Im in Tualatin. Im looking forward to this but scared at the same time. My biggest fear is going through this and gaining it all back. Because of this I am looking for support groups and people. This looks like a nice group. Kaiser people...do any of you go to the Murray or sunnybrook support groups? I went last saturday to sunnybrook.

Welcome janae.

I was an OHSU sleeve patient so I can't help you except to say I've heard really good stuff about the kaiser Bariatric people.

What are you looking to get done? If you are getting a sleeve, gaining it all back is going to be difficult. It's just that I get full so easily that I don't think I'll ever be able to gain it back because weight gain would have to happen so slowly that I would have plenty of time to correct.

Today I had by far, the toughest workout I've done in decades. On my vacation I biked up mount lemon, about 27miles each way with over 7000 feet of elevation. I haven't had dinner yet, but trying my best to eat extra because of my workout in the sun, I'm still only at 1000 calories because that's all I can handle. Gaining weight would be difficult for me now, and I've been a yo yo dieter all my life, but now I don't see that as a possibility.

This really isn't like a diet, it's harder to start but easier to maintain. And the physical restrictions really make it so you just live life a little differently, in a way that results in a skinnier you.

I live in the Molalla area and am 1 week post op. My surgeon was Doctor Patterson. It's been a positive week for the most part. Still in some pain and wondering when the pulling muscle feeling will go away?

I waited a year because of some medical issues before I could have surgery. Whatever info you get from the surgeon, don't lose heart. ????

Each person is different. For me, I had about three days of bad pain, another week where my pain was going down but I was much more able to tolerate it and actually stop taking the pain killers. After about ten days to 1 month my leftover muscle aches and moments of brief pain lessened till after about one month I was feeling great. A couple recommendations that I think greatly helped me are 1) no matter how much it sucks, force yourself to drink your minimum 64oz daily and eat 60oz Protein, and 2) start walking and exercising as soon as you can tolerate it. Treat recovery like a job.

I'm just under 3 months now and I've gone from a 50inch waist to 38's. My blood pressure because of the weight loss and extensive exercise has gone from borderline high to 96/64. This process is amazing in so many ways, but you just need to get through the pain and put in the effort.

Good luck!

Hello all. I just met with my surgeon today and he scheduled me for June 12th. He was very candid with me, it was hard to listen to but it was good for him to say these things to me. I need to lose some more weight by surgery. I gained 2 pounds and he wasn't all that happy. I need to "OWN IT". Those were the two words that stuck with me.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
