So Happy To Have Found This Site

Hi, I'm new to the site and I am so glad I found it. I have so many questions about what other people have gone through before and after having bariatric surgery. I have been reading a lot of threads and have enjoyed reading everybody's comments. I have been struggling with my weight for many years and have now decided to have the gastric sleeve. I have done most of my pre-op consultations already and just had my upper GI done today. I just need to have an echo and stress test next week and get my doctor to sign medical necessity form as well. I'm scheduled for Jan 22, 2014 and I am nervous about failing. I love to eat, obviously....My husband is totally against me having this surgery. He thinks that it's all about self control and that I should be able to control myself and what I eat and I don't know how to explain my feelings for food and how it makes me feel, whether good, bad or indifferent. I have friends who have had the band, and bypass and have been peppering them with questions. I just don't want to fail. I would love to hear from anyone out there. Thanks...Carol

Hi Carol -- welcome! You'll find lots of us Sleevers over in the Gastric Sleeve threads. Come poke around over there. My name is Amanda, and I just had my sleeve done on Tuesday. I've been looking into bariatric surgery for 14 years, but it was never covered by our insurance. Close to two years ago, I decided I was just going to cash pay for the sleeve, and as we began checking to see if our insurance would cover pre-op testing and post-op care, we discovered that the WLS exclusion had been lifted from our insurance. I connected with a local surgeon at that point, but then fell pregnant with our sixth child, so I put WLS on hold. I reconnected with the surgeon in August, and after completing all of my insurance requirements for surgery, I was sleeved this week on 12/03/13. I feel great, I've had no trouble taking in fluids, I've been meeting my Protein numbers, and I'm thrilled with the decision I made. My husband was also reluctant for me to have the surgery, but after he began doing research on his own and watching YouTube videos of sleevers, he grew more comfortable with the idea. He knew I'd reached the point that nothing was working for me to lose weight on my own, and I was being overcome by the chronic effects of morbid obesity. By surgery time, he was on my side, and now that I'm through the actual operation and feeling/doing well, he's thrilled. I think his resistance was entirely based in fear, but he understood and respected my fear in doing nothing at all. Hopefully your guy will come around. In the meantime, find support and encouragement here on these threads.

Best of luck to you!

Carol... we are glad you are here. Trust me, if I could have done this without surgery, I would have! And most on this board would say the same thing!

There is some research that suggests that fat is not just "willpower". See: Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It

Taubes, Gary (I do not swear by these findings, but I read about weight and health a lot now).
Sleeved 6 months ago. Down 100# from my greatest weight. Still more to lose (since I was MORBIDLY obese). Now ALL labs normal, BP well controlled, and I can 'do this ting'.
Glad you are here, and ask anything any time!

Carol I have had the band since 8-23-13. My problem wasn't losing the weight even though it was very difficult. But after losing I would go back to the sweets fast food etc. But now I like to fix dinner at home and able to eat it easier by taking smaller bites and eating slower. I take 22 pills a day was about 33 a day. Lost 26lbs with no fill yet. I do have to use restraint with sweets but when eating normal foods and fixed the way that will let the food go down I find mysekf eating only small meals and feeling satisfied. I am baking this year...oresents and I fear I'll gain weight if I dont stay away from the goodies. But I am losing slowly...my dr. Is pleased with my progress...so I feel good. The wls works. You also have to have a mind change. But with determination you'll make it. It's good your husband supports you that helps alot. I pray that your journey is successful...but remember it won't happen overnight. For me the band is a tool to use wisely toward bettering myself..healthwise and weight wise. Goodluck.

Welcome! I'm sorry to hear your husband isn't on board with your surgery. Does he have weight problems himself or is he one of those 'naturally thin' people? I ask because I've notice that a lot of people that don't have weight issues have no clue and will often say the same thing about self control. Hopefully when he sees your progress he'll come around.

I was on diet after diet for close to 20 years before I finally gave in and got the sleeve last July. I am so glad I did it. Before, I had no self control and I couldn't finish what I started. The sleeve has kind of forced me to be able to do that, in a way. I, too, was TERRIFIED of failure, but here's the thing - you follow your doctors orders and eat well, and it's almost guaranteed that you'll be just fine!

Good luck to you and your surgery, keep us posted!

Hello and welcome! Like you, my husband was totally against me having the surgery. He has never had weight issues and felt like since I "hardly eat" it should be easy for me to do it on my own. He has been slim his whole life. Never weighed more than 160lbs. I was sleeved on Dec. 18th. He has had a change of heart because he can already see how much energy I have since I had the surgery. I finally had to explain that it was something that I was doing for me. After 13 years of marriage and putting my family first, I deserve it. I hope he has a change of heart. You will need your family's support. Good luck.

I am so pleased with myself. In May 2013 I weighed in at 119.6kilos. I lost weight on my pre surgery diet and weighed in at 102 kilos the day of my surgery. My most recent weigh in had me at 90.2 kilos. I have 20 more kilos to lose. I have had 2 adjustments and will be booking in for my final one shortly. Slow and steady, but I feel much healthier already.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
