Listen a prime example why you don't tell people is what happened to me. I was working in a hospital for ten years and everyone that worked on my floor knew I was having surgery. When I came back to work I felt like I had 50 food monitors. Are you supposed to eat that. That isn't enough food, yada yada yada it became very annoying until one day I just exploded on them and told them I don't need any or your approvals of what I can and can not eat. Stop looking at my food and go do your damn job. When I moved to Jacksonville I told no one that I had wls because they just think I eat like a bird. If you don't want people to stand over you and monitor your every bite then don't let them know. Another thing that drove me crazy was how much weight did you lose this week. Again another blow up I said it's none of your damn business. It was so annoying I was glad to meet my husband and move away. Even my coworkers that I am friends with on Facebook from there I know look at my pictures to see if I really am doing good not that they care how I am.

.

Whenever I was on a diet those questions and food monitors appeared. Funny though when I look at the people asking the questions I always felt like they should fix the wY they eat as well even those who weren't overweight . I tell people u eat clean and changed my lifestyle the end. An ap at my school wanted to know when I was going to stop losing. I laughed and said i don't know he doesn't know I was banded hell no one really knows I told only my nearest and dearest and even thAt was questionable loll. I'm shy to say how much I lost because it reminds me of how much I weighed. If y have a doubt keep it to urself cause once you tell one person no controlling who else will know ... Maybe one day ill shout it from the roof tops but for now I keeping my shouting to here :)

Wow ! You guys rock with the "standing up for my self attitude !!" Great job ! I have never received a single negitive comment in the 2 yrs that ive been banded ( Dec 13th, 2011 ! ) , just great positive remarks and compliments . I put WLS in the same catagory as I would if ihad to get braces, if it was needed for my health and future to get braces , no one would think twice or say anything negative . Well you cant fix bad teeth by yourself and some times you cant fix a weight prob by itself either. I truly feel blessed that lap band was available to me as it literally gave me my life back, but im the one that exercises 3 -4 x a week, eats healthy 95 % of the time, and follows my drs orders. So its definetly not " the easy way out!" Down 65 lbs , 20 more to go ! Woohoo !!

Different personalities require different approaches. I have been very open about my WLS because I REFUSE to give anyone false hope, that all you have to do is move more and eat less. I have struggled with being fat since I was six years old, trying every diet under the sun, loosing and gaining, each time more heavy than the last. The people that ask me "How did you do it" are generally looking for a magic bullet, and I am quick to tell them that WLS isn't it. But that it has made the difference in my life.

Easy way out? Monitoring my food intake? Well, I would consider both of those as rude, and I have a very low tolerance for rudeness. :D

I often wonder if it is a Male/Female thing though. When my wife and I got married 15 years ago, the reaction of my co-workers was total joy for me, they couldn't have been happier. The reaction of my wife's co-workers was "Let me tell you all the horror stories of failed marriages and the dangers of marrying a divorced man".

It makes me sort of sad to hear people say they are embarrassed not only with having wls but with the way they look. I've still got a long way to go but I'm not embarrassed by the way I look. I wasn't embarrassed at my highest weight of 365 either. If I'm not comfortable and happy with who I am right now I don't think I would be happy at my ideal weight. I realized a long time ago that the number on the scale will not determine who I am and how I feel on the inside. I also don't mind telling most people that I've had wls. If I can help just one person through hearing my story then it's worth it to me.

Haha! Cute!

But saying this or anything at all, and if ur friends and family are anything like mine, they'll instantly become overnight Nutritionists & wont hesitate to let u know ur food choices & portions are all wrong!

And when u've not lost the weight in 30 days or less theyll think your wls was a waste of time and money.

Once u say uve had wls, everyone (in my case) will expect an instant transformation.

went in for a fill today & had all the Fluid withdrawn to find that I'm not at 8.3cc's (the fill level documented in my chart) at all....

I was actually at 6.4cc's...what a big difference right?

Well I return in 2wks to see:

#1) If the 6.4 is still there OR if its vanishing into thin air over time, ie a LEAK....

OR

#2) If my prior fillers weren't actually filling my band.

She said once the needle is beneath the skin its a hit or miss!

Now how would I explain this to friends & family who are not banded when they ask the famous question "how much weight have u lost" & "You know why you're not losing weight right?" (2 of my very favorite)

My point is, once you've spilled the Beans be prepared to explain yourself & answer to all the spectating "Food Police"

Hi Pepper,

I would not accept this as an answer, the doctor should know if they are in the port or not. I have had a miss before, but they withdrew the needle and made sure it was in the port before pushing the fill in.

They can check by pulling a bit out first and then putting it and the rest of the fill back.

I would not be happy to have had to go through taking all the Fluid out and then filling it back in. (just saying)

I do get questions "are you losing weight" "you look great, how's it going" stuff like that and I just say I'm great thanks how are you doing?

I don't let anyone be my monitor, I'm a grown woman and if someone wanted to take care of me and monitor my habits they would have to buy me a 2 carat diamond first before I would even consider it. Just ask my hubby! :)

I haven't had my surgery yet but knowing the issues I've had in the past, I sure thought I was going to get nothing but positive responses but NOPE!!!! I was shot down and the smile wiped right off my face with the reactions I got.

I even officially lost a friend over this. She feels like I should continue to suffer on yo yo diets with her forever just because her insurance doesn't cover it. She told me I don't need surgery we can fix this but your weight is from your 3 month old and can go away with work, mine is from a lifetime of damage and I need to lose way more than her lil 40lbs.

I've decided not to tell anyone else, I cried. It hurt to learn that people may only support you as long as your in a bad situation right along with them...smh.

@mskeekee01

If I cld do it all over again I'd go for the sleeve.

#1 there's no monthly adjustments searching for a mythical green zone I'm not even sure really exists

#2 w/the sleeve, restriction and your diet begins the next day, out of surgery

and yes, misery does love company...

I've been on the slippery slope of dieting my entire life. if I did muster up the discipline to lose it, I'd always always regain it all back....

so do what works best for you and no one else...don't let her influence your weight loss decisions.

I wish I'd done it sooner I'd probably be at goal weight by now instead of toying around w/this diet and the next.

also, which ever you decide, don't tell anybody, unless you're ready to explain the good and the bad (the bad is often harder to explain)

Just let them look up one day, and say hey!! You're losing weight...only then you can fill them in on whatever you had done...if you so choose...

People don't understand WLS unless they go to meetings and talk to others. It is not an easy way out. It is a tool that has to be worked with. If your car doesn't have gas and oil, that tool won't take you out of the driveway. If we don't oil our tool and baby it like our cars it won't get us to 80 or 90 or older. My family, both sides, live until 90-100 and I would like only if I am healthy and with my tool The Band, I feel I may make it to 90. My mother is 95, mind is gone but very healthy.

As far as telling friends or family, I only told my very close family before and after the Band told very few people. I still don't like sharing my personal life. I have had people ask why I don't eat more and I say i have plenty of food thank you. I don't share my pounds lost with anyone but my husband. If I told my sons then they would have to lie when asked because I wouldn't share that number. I was huge, bigger than I ever thought, 268 when I started and that number will never be told to anyone.

Yesterday on Wendy Williams, Rubeun Studdard was on and he said WLS is the easy way out. How wrong is that???? All his years of dieting have not been successful. He needs major help and being young, this is the time to get the help, not when you are over 60, like me.

So everyone, I got carried away, sorry. But don't tell people about WLS unless they are your partner in life. After the surgery, then when it is too late, then tell others and tell them off if they don't approve. Your body, not theirs.

Have a warm day. It is very cold in Boston.

Arlene

@dylanmiles23

I saw that episode w/reuben studdard and Wendy Williams's lap band advice.

She also said that the band was not working for some other political official guy up north, who has not lost a ton of weight in a short time.

so announcing to the world that you're on any diet plan or surgery automatically places you under the spot light. From then on out, you're on Weight loss Watch

If you don't lose, they judge you, if you don't lose it fast enough, they judge you..

if you lose too much, or too soon, they judge you..

even my very own partner has his opinions, he shld keep to himself...

Lol, I am very honest with myself and with others. I was banded Sept 17 and have gone from 259 to 203 pounds (I was weighed in this morning as I am getting B12 shots) and My band (named Destiny) remains unrestricted.

I want people to know that there are options and the lap band along with an amazing bariatric team loosing weight can happen. My walk is not perfect, but I am really dedicated and I look forward to what is ahead.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
