Does Feeling Of Fullness Get Better After Puree Food Stage?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering about feeling of fullness after the soft/puree diet stage. I am 3 weeks (tomorrow) post op and am on the puree/soft foods stage of my diet. I am not sure if it is because of the incredible amount of restriction I used to have from my lap band (I lost almost 200 pounds before complications started) but I feel like I can eat too much right now. My current daily diet is (2) Atkins Protein Shakes. 1 pack of "Weight Control" Quaker oatmeal, approx 8oz of soft broiled fish or imitation crab meat and 2-3 tablespoons of Omega 3 Peanut Butter. I will also have 2-3 tablespoons of pimento cheese daily. I have only felt really full (actually overly full) 2 times since my revision surgery. My question is this: Does the feeling of fullness get better once I can start eating solid foods? Any comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think that there are a couple of things going on. First the liquid and soft phases often do leave you hungrier as it just doesn't stick. When I started switching to firmer food, I really had a hard time eating at all for awhile. Second, if you are not being treated for acid, you should consider getting on a PPI. The stomach still produces enough acid for 100% size and it is 15% size... it takes awhile for the acid production to reduce on it's own. Acidy tummy feels like hunger. 3, nerves were cut and it takes some time for you to really "feel". It is easy to overeat and not realize it.

My advice is that the first say 6 weeks or so, eat by the measuring cup and clock - your body is not yet properly recognizing hunger signals.

I had the lapband for 10 years and been sleeved for 2. I think the key thing to success with sleeve is rather then thinking how much you "can" eat, thing in terms of how little you need to eat to feel the absence of hunger. You won't get that pain feeling, I never get that saliviating or other awful signals i got from the band. With the band, i often went from, hungry to vomiting with almost no warning. For me, with the sleeve, it is more like having a petite tummy - none of the weirdness. It takes time to get there though and I highly recommend developing the habit to eat as little as it takes to remove your hunger and to eat 4-6 meals a day while in the weight loss phase. (or 3 mini meals and a very small snack or two).

Good luck! I love my sleeve and hope you have tremendous success!

It didn't get better for me. I'm 10 weeks out and feel like I can eat way too much compared to everyone else I've read about. I honestly feel like Iv never had surgery, sure I eat less than someone who has never had surgery but it's very comparable to what I ate with the band. I lost 17 lbs the first month and have been stalled for about 5 weeks now. I'm pretty worried long term and hoping I didn't make a huge mistake, I was very successful with the band.

I'm not on any restrictions as far as diet goes. I was trying really hard in the beginning to watch my Protein but I was hungry all the time and starting to obsess. I started on Prilosec (for the extra acid) and that did help some but I still get hungry often and I never did with the band. I did great with the band eating whatever I wanted just very little of it so I started to try that the last couple of weeks but that's not really working either. I'm pretty much to the point of accepting this is on me now. With the band it was 80% band 10% me and I lost all my weight and kept it off for six years. With the sleeve I feel it's 80% me. I am very jealous of those who say they never feel hunger or think about food or get full on 6 bites. I had that before and was hoping it would be the same with the sleeve just less getting stuck. Iv never thrown up since my surgery but I do at times get very very nauseous and I can't figure out what causes it yet. Good luck to you, hope your experiences are better than mine have been.

I have not vomited since my sleeve revision either, however, those (2) times that I ate too much I felt VERY nauseous. I have only ate things that are not on my diet (1) time and that was yesterday while me and my wife were out of town shopping. I had a bowl of Lobster bisque for dinner and a half piece of gourmet white chocolate as a snack for lunch. (I didn't eat any lunch because we had dinner reservations at 5pm). I did not beat myself up over eating it because I have been on a liquid/puree diet for over a month now. What seems weird to me is that even if I don't feel full after I eat my 4oz of Protein, as soon as I have Water (30 minutes after eating) its like I feel overly full (nauseous). Very different from the band. I personally do not have any scales at my house so I don't weigh myself very often. However, all my clothes are getting looser so I pray that I am indeed losing weight. I know I should be keeping a food diary but have not started one yet. I may have to after that lobster bisque and chocolate yesterday lol . I DO KNOW that I can not eat the same things as I did with my band or I will definitely start gaining weight. With the band, I could only eat horrible food choices because healthy food simply would not to through my band. Many times even Water or any other liquid would not go through the band. When I had my band I always bragged like I was on a Jenny Craig commercial. "I lost 194 pounds eating Reese Cups" lol I hope this all works out for both of us.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
