Are You Having Someone Stay With You In The Hospital?

Recommended Posts

I'm having surgery on 12/16. I'm trying to figure out if I should have my husband stay with me. In my info booklet I got from my surgeon it says I should have someone stay with me the first night. But at pre-op class yesterday the nurse said it's really not necessary.

I'll have a private room so that's good. But I don't want to put him through the joys of staying in a hospital.

Just wondering what other folks did.

I made people stay away, the last thing I wanted was to feel like I needed to entertain someone when I should be focused on nothing but sipping and walking. If I needed help at any time, that's what the nurse call button is for.

My hubby and my eldest daughter stayed. The hubby had already planned to stay, my daughter stayed cuz I was so sick ( I was one of the unfortunate ones who was deathly nauseated/vomiting/dry heaving). A good friend of mine didn't have anyone stay at all...it all depends on what you want, but I can say I told my hubby he didn't have to stay and he said he was staying with me anyway :-)

NO WAY do I want to have to worry about ANYONE else but myself! Come, visit, then go home and let me rest and heal!!

Oh , trust me I don't feel like having to deal with people but hubby is my rock :). I'm scheduled for surgery at 8am on the 16th and should be released on the 18th. He was talking about taking off the 16th and 17th to be with me, working half a day on Wednesday and then taking that afternoon off to pick me up. He has to work some that week as his office will be closing for the rest of the year starting the following week.

I'm getting the feeling that my hubby is starting to stress about me having surgery. I think he wants to be there as much as possible and while I don't think I'll mind him being there I don't want him going crazy either.

Thanks for the input!

My boyfriend and mum was waiting while I had my surgery.

My mum stayed with me for awhile, to make sure I was stable, see how I was, and to get me talking a little.

My boyfriend stayed the night with me, because I have panic and anxiety about staying in unfamiliar places.

He stayed because he wanted to make sure I wouldn't be alone and scared.

I have anxiety issues too and this is my first ever surgery so I'm thinking it won't be a bad idea to have him along for the ride :) I figure day 1 I'm going to be pretty out of it, but I would appreciate seeing a familiar face when I come to. Not sure how Day 2 goes...

If your husband is taking time off its probably best to take the days you get home and no one's there to be with you. Plenty of help in hospital

It's just so nice to be among people who are right where you are. And right now it seems like everyone has started or is getting ready to start their pre-op diet so it is really getting real now :)

I had my husband make sure I came through surgery ok and he visited me but I did not want him to stay. I was really sick and dry heaving and there was nothing he could have done to make me feel better anyway. I didn't want him to have to deal with me like that. Honestly, looking back on my stay now, it was all a blur.

I'm scheduled for Dec. 18th and I plan on staying that night alone in the hospital so that my hubby can go home and stay with our 2 year old. I don't want to inconvenience anyone to have to stay with my daughter. And like previous posters said- there is plenty of help at the hospital :)

Last year was my first surgery...knee replacement. Even though there are lots of "horror stories" about this surgery, it wasn't bad at all. I think that experience was what helped me decide to get the sleeve. My husband stayed with me the whole time and

I was really glad. I'm okay with him leaving me some when I get the sleeve, though.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
