Horrible Reflux/heartburn The Last 2 Nites....

Recommended Posts

Almost reminiscent of when my lapband had slipped last year. I'm now 4 mths post op and take 20mg of RX Prilosec 2x a day. I literally ate 1/2 bottle of Tums last nite. Also had to take 150mg of OTC Zantac to be able to even lie down. Had to wait for it to kick in before lying down.

This is absolutely the worst my reflux/heartburn (I had both the last couple nites. Usually it's either/or) has been since getting sleeved. I plan on taking my PPI forever (if thats what I have to do to prevent being obese again, I will) but will I also have to add several Extra Strength OTC Zantacs also? That was my "before surgery" pill ratio. Thought that was over.

And yes, I know I shouldn't eat before going to bed. I can eat very little and to keep from starving at 2 am, I usually eat 1/4 of a PB and banana sandwich before bed. I will try and cut that out tonite and see if that makes a difference. Thought this was 1 of the reasons I had sleeve revision (besides the fact that the slipped band HAD to come out anyway!)

Maybe talk to your doc about switching PPI's. Prilosec didn't work very well for a couple friends of mine and they switched to Protonix and did great.

That's the story of my sleeve life! I take PPI and H2 blockers twice daily andstill eat tums. Other than switching PPI...... We get to be skinny acidity biatches....... There is agree thread about that, search it. Don't eat 2 hrs before lying down, decrease caffeine, no carbonation, switch meds

I get heartburn from any kind of breads or grains. You mentioned a sandwich at bedtime? Maybe try just PB and banana. Even popcorn can cause it for me. Eating yogart everyday helps a lot. When I slack on my organic yogurt, I notice more heartburn. I don't know why.

Sorry you are in pain, no fun!

I luckily dont have a reflux problem with sleeve until after my plastic surgery. uber tight compression garments!! Not eating after about 7 and laying propped by pillows solved it. I agree that if you do eat late make it Greek yogurt and really small portion. (In fact itty bitty portions earlier in the day is also key. ) I think a sandwich before bed would give me reflux.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
