Having A Hard Time Getting Liquids Down =(

Recommended Posts

Before my surgery I loved drinking crystal light ice tea, Snapple diet and ice Water and a lot of it.....now I can barely drink the ice water...I cannot tolerate the diet drinks...I made brewed ice tea, no sugar or lemon and that works a bit....does anyone have any suggestions...also I was never a soda drinker either...thanks !

I found that in the beginning I had to have all my drinks warm. I love drinking ice cold drinks, but, it just didn't work for me for a couple of months. I still find plain Water hard to swallow.

I was told that at first, drink nothing too hot or ice cold as it shocks the stomach. My surgery was 11/11/13. WISH I COULD GET THE TICKER TO WORK SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO SAY IT IN EVERY POST. So, I'm a newbie. Today is my fist day full day home. I can have sugar-free apple juice (that's the only type of juice I'm allowed). I like the Crystal Light berry drinks so plan to put some unflavored Protein Powder in some for tomorrow. My paperwork says that once I can tolerate Clear Liquids that I can have Tomato juice and V8 juice (not the fruit juice kind). Hope this helps...

If it weren't for the horrible and I mean horrible chest pain I keep having I think I could drink just about anything. Anyone else having really bad chest pain. I was sleeved 11/11/13 also.

I had a difficult time getting them down until about days 5-8. I will be 1 month out next week and some days are still a challenge. What your sleeve will allow does and will change day to day. Room temp beverages seem to usually do the trick for me..but what the beverage is does change day to day.

Try everything you can think of(within your allowed plan). It definitely is a struggle for the first 2 weeks. But get at least the minimum. Jello sugar free even counted to my minimum some days.

Good luck everyone.

I'm on day 11 post op. At first I had problems with any liquids at all. I'm doing better now. Still not getting all my fluids in. Before the sleeve I didn't drink much most of the time anyway. Never did have the gas pains, thank goodness! so far i'm down 11 lbs since surgery, 22 lbs total! The first couple of days I had pain from the surgery itself, the lemon glycerin swabs were a life saver! Good luck to all!

I was sleeved on 11/8. I have a hard time with Water but can down apple juice. I drink only 1 cup a day because I don't want to push it but every day it is a struggle.

I convinced myself that I must drink 1 cup every hour I am awake to meet my 12 cups of liquid per day.

I thought I might conisder just setting an alarm for when to drink and eat. This way I can get it all in when I am suppose to until it becomes natural...

Good luck to you!

Sleeved 10/28, and I had some trouble determining how much was too much of a sip. I tried a Camelbak bottle, but I kept having gurgles in my chest. My surgeon said "no straws", but the rest of the sleeve community said they use them with no trouble.

I switched to a Tervis Tumbler without the straw, and I prefer my Water ice cold. I actually prefer Water over anything else. It took me about a week to get the sipping thing down, and now I can take a small mouthful without pain or gurgling.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
