MANOMETRY TESTING? ANYONE HAD THIS DONE SINCE THE SLEEVE?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone here had the experience of having a MANOMETRY test?? It is a test where they insert a tube in your nostril and down your throat into the stomach to monitor pressure in your esophagus and stomach???? I have to have this horrid test next week. I'm scared! I don't want to have this test but I've been having esophageal spasms and terrible GERD since the surgery and my surgeon is making me have this test and another EDG to insert a chip inside to monitor my digestive system for 24 hours. If anyone has had these test, please let me know your experience. I'm terrified. I'm 17 months postop and having these issues. Thank you!

Nicki YES you are! :) Girl, you are amazing. You are going through all this stuff and you ask me about my testing. So sweet.

Well, I backed out of them!haha I just did not see the reasoning behind the stupid things. I know I have GERD. I've had an upper GI, Cat Scan, and EGD. I decided it wasn't necessary for my surgeon to pin that capsule to my esophagus to measure the acid in my tummy. I was told from the last endoscope that I had bile reflux. I would do it if I were going to swallow the pill camera but this is different and it can cause all sorts of problems. When they pin it to your esophagus it is supposed to fall off in 7 days. I've heard how painful it can be and I just couldn't do it. My stomach hurts to much as it is now. And the Manometry, well, I'm a chicken!! Just terrifies me to think of doing that! SO anyway, I backed out.

I plan on seeing my PCP and having him refer me to a gastroenterologist and get a second opinion about the testing I've had so far. I know I'm going to do everything I can not to have RNY but I'm not sure I can live like this forever. I would be ok without the spasms. The GERD I can live with but the spasms.. thats something else. I am able to eat though so that is good. I wish I could lose the rest of this weight but I'm ok if I don't.

Thank you so much for asking! I appreciate it so much!

From the responses I've gotten or lack there of, I don't think anyone is experiencing the spasms like I am. This is why I need to see a GI doc. Also, not too many people have had these test after the sleeve either. That is why I thought twice about it. :)

Yes, Lisa, sounds like you're being very reasonable about all of it! I would definitely get another opinion, especially that of a GI doctor...they know all the ins and outs of our bellys! And I don't know how to explain it but my surgeon is just the doctor who did my surgeries but my GI doctor is the one who's explained everything to me in vivid detail. Not trying to take anything away from my surgeon who has been phenomenal but he was just concerned with what he had done as far as my surgeries were concerned, nothing else.

I also never had the spasms you are talking about just the extreme GERD where I couldn't keep anything down and couldn't eat or drink without it coming back up so I can only imagine what terrible pain that must feel like. Please go see the GI doc and let me know what he says! You're in my thoughts and prayers too.

Hugs, Niki

I am so sorry you are going through this. I think you are very wise to proceed cautiously and seek an expert. I remind myself that they call it practicing medicine for a reason.

Hang in there and keep us posted!

I recently had an esophageal manometry, and it was by far the worst test that I've endured! I had to have 10 consecutive uninterrupted swallows. The numbing spray wore off half way through the test, which was painful. My test lasted for about 1 hr 15 mins because I couldn't get 10 consecutive sips and swallows without the intermittent swallows by nature. Smh I felt like I was choking the entire time! My RN was extremely nice and considerate, which helped, a little. Yet and still, I will NOT have that test again! I'm currently awaiting results to determine whether or not the sleeve or bypass would be most appropriate.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
