Restriction on liquids

Recommended Posts

This issue has been bothering me the last two days now. I was sleeved on the 18th of Oct. I am following my doc's post op diet of full liquids for two weeks. I feel like I have minimal restriction with just liquids. If I accidentally take a gulp of liquid then I have pressure in my chest but it quickly goes away (less than a min or two). I can sip my way through a Protein Shake with no problem. Am I just driving myself crazy, and this is totally normal? Will the restriction be there when I move to more solid foods? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I am over 5 weeks out and mine is the same way. I feel that way with certain foods. I do feel like it's getting better as time goes by.

You will get no restriction with liquids. This starts when you move to solid foods. With liquids, the pyloric valve easily opens and moves the liquids into the intestines soon after it enters the stomach.

Don't worry, it will come. Just be sure not to drink fluids when you do start on solids.

Thanks for the input. That makes sense to me, I just needed someone who has been through this to tell me it's normal. I have had zero complications, no nausea or vomiting. Besides just being annoyed with Protein Shakes I still can't get over how smooth things have been.

Can you tell me, I don't seem to be having much restriction with puree either. Do you think it's because everything is so thinned?

Anything with liquid is going to slide right through, pretty much. The pyloric valve opens up when the contents of the stomach are in a liquidy, pasty state. If it is going in like that, then it will not stay for long.

Again, as I mention in my first reply, solid foods begin to give you restriction. Lean Protein will provide the greatest, longest restriction.

Thanks.. I was hoping the puree would be better and it is but just a little. As hard as it is I'm enjoying each stage knowing that I'm heading in the right direction.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
