Kids can be so mean!

And because I'm already on my own tangent... you may have already heard this story, maybe not.

ASn intramural basketball team in Northern Colorado named their team the "Fighting Whites". Their mascot is a 50s style father type. This is in a heavily Native American population. One of the founders of the team was married to a teacher in the local school district. Their school's team name was the "Fightin' Reds" and featured an Indian characture complete with large nose and deep set wrinkles. People protested. White people. They Fighting Whites originally chose "Native Pride" for their team name, but decided to make a point. "The Fighting Whities" issue is "to make people understand what it's like to be on the other side of the fence. If people get offended by it, then they know how I feel, and we've made our point."

Their mascot:

My friend and I went walking yesterday. We walked by an elementary school where some young boys were playing baseball. It looked like a Little League team practice since there were a few parents out also. Well, as we passed the field, the kid on first base yells, "Y'all need to go to Weight Watchers". I know this is common for kids to do especially when they want their peers to think they are "cool". But shame on the parents for not reprimanding him for his actions. No one said a word to him .

>>

I can't pass up a snappy answer to a stupid remark:

"Hey Kid! I might be fat but I can lose weight too bad you're ugly!"

................................................

One of the things I love about my school is it is such a melting pot.

Everyone gets along because everyone is from someplace else.

You can't be spanish because you might be Puerto Rican or Cuban, or Haitian or Dominican or Guatemalan which BTW, there is no universal spanish so they "correct" eachother's spanish. It's a fun game and fast friends are made that way.

I LOVED that comment to the kid Tom. (still laughing)

Isn't oriental a rug but Oriental is an insulting way to refer to Asians?
Yes... kind of my point exactly.

Allow me to play Devil's advocate. The kids are kids. You're 47. Aren't you a little better than that? Say something to the parents, sure...

I grew up in an affluent area where whites were -- well, if they were a majority, it was a very small one. Half our school was from military housing in southern California which means a lot of mixed families and people from the Phillipines, Samoa, Thailand, etc. I didn't grow up with racism. There was racism, but it wasn't so much "black-white" (as it was in my later highschool). It was very sad and a very transition to move here and have to relearn how the races intermingled.

No, it is a more specific way to describe someone of far eastern descent when you don't know their nationality. "Asian" is too broad -- it encompasses Indians, Isrealis, Russians, Turks, Saudis, and lots of different people. One of my friends of Chinese descent uses the term "Oriental" to describe herself, so it's clearly only offensive in certain circles. I have an Oriental Shorthair cat. I guess I should start referring to her as an Asian Shorthair. I hope I haven't been hurting her feelings all these years. People are eager to find offense where there is none.

Ain't that the truth! Call me white, call me caucasian, call me Italian-American, or call me a WHOP -- I could care less.

I agree. Especially with the whole white/black thing. It's just annoying, really. But sure enough, the first time you aren't PC, someone will jump all over you for it. I think that by being such a PC culture, we're causing more harm than we're helping. We're forcing people to remain conscious of the differences rather than just promoting an environment of "being". We're almost making it taboo to rcognize honest and true differences in our backgrounds and upbringings.

I live in an area of Indiana which has a lot of illegals. I just recently found out that among the illegal population in our area, they feel they are more readily accepted if they deny being from Mexico and say they are from Guatemala , El Salvador, etc.(Keep in mind the people I am referring to ARE actually from Mexico.) The ironic part is that in this little hick area I live in any Hispanic is automatically called a Mexican and the people who are prejudiced could care less where they are really from.

My friend (from school) who was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Brooklyn while still in diapers, spent much of his time in the US Military Service in Silver Springs Colorado (early 1960's) where he met a Mexican/American (born in the USA from legal immigrants) from Pueblo, Colorado and eventually got married. He had to give up trying to explain that he was not Mexican, but Puerto Rican, and why he did not know what the foods (of Mexican heritage) were.

He has now lived in Pueblo, Colorado for the past 40 years and recently retired after working his way up the ladder (to the top) at an insurance brokerage. He has become a de facto Mexican. White people have tunnel vision.

As an Asian-American I'm only slightly offended by the word "oriental". For the most part people aren't using "oriental" as a pejorative, but I will correct people when "oriental" is used to describe Asian people. It's an archaic term like "negro" that isn't needed, besides I'd rather be reffered to as that "hot Asian chick". (I would've added smart too, but Asian just implies that. Ha ha ha...just being satirical.) :)

As hot as you may be, and yes, I do find many members of the group that was once called Oriental (when I was young) to be very beautiful, let's get back to the question of taste in using the words Oriental and Asian and the purpose of distinguishing the meaning of the words.

Asia is a large continent. When I have used the word Oriental, I was referring to people from China, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, both Korea's, Laos, Thailand. Asian would include all those countries, plus India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, many of the 'stans and countries that were part of the Soviet Union, etc.

Question #1. Without getting too deep into analysis of teeth, genes, etc. Is there a term that will include the people from the first group of countries, while excluding the people from the second?

Question #2. Is Oriental an insult, or is it just not the preferred "nom de jour"?

Calling a Black person a Negro is not normally considered insulting, just dated. Calling a Black person an Afro-American or African-American is both not always accurate, nor is it consistent with Irish-American, Italian-American, Polish-American, Pakistani-American, etc. All of those groups would have to be called European-American and Asian-American to be consistent with either Afro-American or African-American. Continents and countries are not the same. Also as I gave an example of earlier, not all Blacks are Americans, so not all Blacks are Afro-American or African-American.

So to follow up on question #2. Is there an inaccuracy or insult implied in "Oriental"? Some people have said that people of as group should be referred to as they want to be referred to, but I have met people who I had in the past referred to as Oriental who were annoyed and people who said that they would rather be referred to as Oriental than Asian, just as I have known people who want to be call Black and detest Afro-American and vice-versa.

I find it almost amusing how some groups are singled out by one characteristic, while other groups are singled out by a different characteristic. Example, a coworker once told me that he saw a Jew, a Puerto Rican, an Italian, and a Black man walking down the street. He could have been talking about 2, 3 or 4 people. He identified one person by his religion, one by his ethnicity, one by his nationality and one by his race. Couldn't one person have been a Puerto Rican who was Black and was a member of a synagogue? Or couldn't the Italian have been Jewish?

We sure can screw things up.

Back to the topic of cruel kids. A couple of years ago I was subbing in a high school PE class for a month. Ya I know, what am I doing teaching a PE class? The PE teachers like me and I don't let the kids get away with anything. Well anyways one day (a mile day) one of the "mean" girls decided to make a fat crack about me very loudly to the whole class. As soon as the class quieted down I said to her, "Oh honey you're just looking at your future if you continue to not run the miles or play in the games, 'cause when I was your age...I was thinner than you." Needless to say she never made a crack like that to me, or to any of the kids she bullied in the school. I know I shouldn't have participated in public humiliation, but it was my last straw with her since parent phone calls and detention didn't seem to work.

You folks are smarter so surely you understand ignorance, right? LOL!!! (Sorry, I too could not resist)(wiping brow and hoping that joke comes off as a funny joke and not a slam)
BubbleButt: It was taken as intended, because I'm smart like that...not because I'm Asian or Filipino, but because I'm a woman. :whoo:

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
